We have a small croft/small holding here in NE Scotland with a few animals. Consequently we don’t like to get away for more than about 2 or 3 nights in the depths of winter as the animals need looking after, and there’s only so much you can ask a neighbour to do. However this time of year with the weather improving we like to take a short trip away (close enough to get home in case of really bad weather) and it coincides with both our birthdays.
We have just arrived home after a cracking short trip down to Northumberland. Places we stayed at for 1 or 2 nights during the trip were:

- Kingsbarns, Fife (Fife Countryside and Coast Trust)
- Archerfield Walled Garden, East Lothian (Britstop)
- Beadnell overflow car park (Northumberland Council), excellent meal in Salt Water Cafe and breakfast in The Landings, highly recommended.
- Howling Lane Long Stay car park, Alnwick. Not special but does its job as it’s an easy walk into town. Barter Books is well worth a visit.
- Hadrians Wall Campsite. Don’t like sites but we needed a drain down and fill up and this small site was just the business. Only £20 without EHU.
- Redesdale Arms, Rochester (Britstop). Run by a young couple who are really trying to make a go of it. Lovely coffee shop with home made cakes and decent enough meal in the evening. Worth a stopover.
- Limekilns Pier Car Park (Fife Countryside and Coast Trust)
- Glen Shee wildcamp

Apart from Howling Lane I would recommend any of these stops for an overnighter and even Howlig Lane did what it was meant to do!
