A friend coming back from Wales on tuesday in his transit carrying some furniture he had bought online.

He stopped for the night in a layby between Hereford and Gloucester to get his head down and got the police knocking on the door about 11.00.

He was told that he had to move on and he was not allowed to sleep overnight in laybys anymore even though he not seen any signs.

He drove another few miles and parked up with no problems.

So that's every truck in the uk then, every tired driver? Can't stop anywhere to rest? A lay by with no signs, I think I would have challenged that.

I think I would take that up with the Chief Constable, asking for details of the law being enacted. Unless there is an obstruction being caused I understood it isn't an offence to park in a lay by for whatever reason. I was asked by a policeman to move my truck forward in a lay by so they could get an escorted load in and he was happy to sign my tacho so as not to affect my break.

I'm sure the Highway Code advises drivers to stop in laybys for a nap if tired whilst driving. Maybe it needs updating to say that this is against the law.
