Hi, Ambling slowly down the D3 motorway in France towards Aix Les Bains a couple of weeks ago I pulled up at a service station/ shop for some beer to go with Madams steak that evening. Not seeing any on the shelf I enquired. We are not allowed to sell beer on the motorway, if we do, then the police VIT. The VIT was followed by a hand across his throat signifying he would get the chop. But I protested you have two shelves of wine & some brandy for sale. Sir he said, France is a civilised country; one cannot eat a meal without wine or a little digestive afterwards.The bottle of Cotes du Rhone went down very well.

Licensing laws are strange. I've got a feeling local ones are more to do with making money than any other concerns. I'm sure I've been able to buy beer at Belgian motorway services and at French MacDonlads it has been possible to buy un bierre avec le Big Mac.

Ne pas seulement en France, mon cher Dezi :D:rolleyes:
Be happy that in some 'civilised' countries every new law, reglementation or restriction has its own bypass or backdoor. If only to point out how rediculous some of these lawmakers are.
:eek::rolleyes::confused::cool::D

Bonjour, mon ami Leo. Methinks you speak the truth. Incidently, Madam & I were enjoying a meal in the best weston motel just outside Arlon on Friday ( No I was not paying, we were guests )

Could this have something to do with the reputation of the British abroad being lager-louts? Booze (wine) is far cheaper in France and Spain than here and the licensing laws generally less restrictive but you rarely see abuse of alcohol on the scale you do in this country on a Friday night. The answer for responsible English drinkers? When in Rome........ The beer (tasteless lager for the most part - Belgium excepted) is nowhere near as good as the wine anyway. Happy drinking.
