Since updating to IOS 14.8 when I got a decent signal I have noticed in the last few days an app called ‘web’ in the battery usage list. I also had a message a few days ago (before noticing this app) which came with an Apple junk warning with a button to delete and report, which on reflection I cannot be certain was genuinely from Apple. Do Apple give such warnings, was it fake? This app seems to be in regular operation using variable amounts of battery and screen time each day. I can’t find it on app listing and can’t delete it as it doesn’t appear in the home screen or App Store listings. I have scoured the internet and looked at the few comments on Apple forum but none seem to apply. Have I cause for concern?

Just a thought. Wild Camping App…is this a web app, is that what is using it?

Sorry, should have added this as well ….

“The "Web"-icon in the battery settings are the time, where was used by visiting a website, where you have saved from safarias "Add to Home Screen" via the share-button.”

Yup. I read that on the internet, but I haven’t used that. The only none-app store web based app I have in use is Wildcamping. What concerns me is that malware could be faking the hidden ‘web’ app.

Correction, I see that I can upgrade to IOS15. Do you know how much data the download uses…as I’m on mobile data at the moment?
Ah, found it 3.2GB. Also found there is a bug in 15 that causes some phones to show storage full when it isn’t…patch not yet issued.

Have you backed up your iPhone to iTunes or the iCloud recently, if so, and it was before you noticed the web app, you could restore it to an earlier backup. Or, try resetting the phone to see if that has any effect. If it is some sort of malware or virus type app, then I don’t think updating to the latest iOS version will delete it.

Have to wait until home to backup to computer. Too much stuff to backup on mobile data. I have noticed the web app uses battery more or less in proportion to the time I spend on Wildcamping app which is the only non-Apple web based app I use… hence my question..perhaps Phil could answer that?

If the web app is malware, you don’t want to be backing up your phone now, you’ll only be keeping/ saving a potential problem.
If you can confirm this isn’t something from the forum, you should find a previous backup made before you noticed the web app was on your phone and restore it from that.

I just put the WC app on my iPhone and now see the Web app listed in my battery usage. So, I guess yours is the same and all is as it should be.

Capital Dr Watson, it would appear you’ve confirmed my deduction! It’s a relief to have it confirmed I don’t have to keep giving it sour looks and scratching my head. It’s probably been there some time I only noticed it because I was looking for anything suspicious.

In Apple mail if it suspects something is junk it can give you a similar advisory but it doesn’t mean for sure it is harmful. IOS is a very secure system so long as your device has not been jailbroken. As Trev likes to say move to Linux and be safe, IOS isn’t Linux but was developed from the same core code. Probably the most secure devices you can get straight out the box
