One for the Auto Electricians - Dipped Beam not playing....Help!!

Hi folks,

a quick one for the electrical genius's amongst you.

My nearside dipped beam on the 508d Merc wasnt working so I thought new bulb.

Took it apart and put the new buld in.......nothing....

Got the multmeter out and find that I get a voltage to the bulb carrier when on dipped beam without a bulb but when I put a bulb in the voltage drops down to zero and the bulb doesnt come on. Whn I try the same experiment on the main beam, I have a voltage of about 12.2v in the bulb carrier, when I put the bulb in in drops to about 11.4v.

When I try the experiment on the other side on the dipped beam it it runs fine, a voltage to the carrier without the bulb of around 12 dropping to 11.4 or so with the bulb in.

Wracking the old brains here as to what could be the cause of this but as yet no idea at all.

Any clues out there??

Any help would be greatfully received.

thanks

sounds like a bad conection or earth somewhere. have to keep searching for it. not uncommon. if a load goes on it breaks the circuit.

Testing

I would check back along the circuit for any dodgy connectors, sounds to me like something is breaking down under load.

Cheers fella, will have a search

check the main conector if i remember is on the back of the head light you will find that there will be a good voltage when the circuit is on and the bulb conected on the input side of the conector if this is the case disconect the conector and check the pins for green corrosion if they are too far gone to clean then by pass the conector by splicing a wire around the outside. the other likley cause could be if your vehicle is fitted with ceramic fuses then the one for dip on that side could have a loose fitment use your volt meter to check either side when circuit is on and under load
