Older motorhomes in Portsmouth - Clean Air Zone charge includes Isle of Wight ferry

I own a diesel 1991 classic Hymer and in the new plans for a Clean Air Zone in Portsmouth it includes the only accessible route for the Isle of Wight ferry, making it impossible to avoid roads that incur a daily £50 charge. Despite my venerable motorhome being a ‘classic’ it is only 30 years and not the 40 years to qualify as vintage and escape the penalty.
Continental ferries will only be accessible by coming into Portsmouth on either of the only two other roads, through busy residential urban areas with lots of stop start at traffic lights, crossings, etc and so much more pollution than the usual M275 straight into the port, without going into the city. This seems bonkers to me, especially as a Portsmouth resident.
I wrote to the council with a query on the ecological sense of forcing scrapping of older motorhomes and making the Isle of Wight impossible to reach any longer without a huge charge, and reminding them that much of the air particulate comes from tyres and brake pads, which exist on every vehicle, even so-called green electric vehicles. My letter to Portsmouth City Council had this unapologetic reply:

“Unfortunately larger, older motorhomes (pre Euro 6) will be charged to enter the Portsmouth CAZ (you can check if your vehicle will be charged at www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones). The charge will be £50 per day of entry, for non-compliant vehicles.

At a meeting of Portsmouth's Cabinet last month, it was decided that there would be no further scope to introduce exemptions to the CAZ. Where exemptions have been permitted, this has been for reasons such as the provision of the essential emergency services, animal welfare purposes, or where the owner faces unfeasible costs in replacing or upgrading their vehicles. Exemptions have been kept to a minimum as the longer it takes for vehicles to be upgraded to newer, less polluting models, the longer it will take to reach compliance with national limits of air pollution.”

So be warned if you visit Portsmouth to get to the Isle of Wight or France and Spain and check the CAZ to avoid the usual approaches.
Perhaps if they had enough complaints they might make a route possible for motorhomes?

I currently have 3 vehicles one of them is okay to drive in all LEZ, one is exempt in all CAZ the third is chargeable in all zones.

Looks like the route into the port is ok, just not the isle of wight ferry, I can see the Lymington ferry getting busy.

Start a partition to the gov stating vh were bought before this came in and should be exempt through their life, diesel gate springs to mind.
WE don't have any cr-p here but know a chap went to England only to find 3/4 fines when he got home, he had no idea about lez zones.

I have just checked my van 54 plate and it seems it is OK for Portsmouth , or does that mean the Portsmouth Zone is not live yet ? I would not want to go to POMPEY under any circumstances Hee Hee.
The CAZ starts in Portsmouth in November 2021 so sadly the charge will appear then. It will be £50 per day, quite a lot extra on the Isle of Wight ferry ticket price for a weekend in your MH.

I imagine the engines on those ferries aren't the cleanest.
One of the Isle of Wight ferries has been upgraded to ‘ECO’ and uses electricity to power into harbour, and eventually these ones will upgrade, so that is positive. The other ferries and cruise ships spew out black smoke as they come into port, and one of the reasons why Tipner area of Portsmouth near to the Motorway (not in the CAZ) and the ferries and dockyard has the highest rates of asthma and air pollution. Penalising older MHs in the scale of things makes no sense.

Yes, but older MHs will have to be very careful to go straight into the continental port off the M275 or get fined.

Not live yet starts November zone map is here using mouse it turns blue looks like we#ll still be able to get into the international ferry port on the main rd

Fit a large balloon to the ex pipe to you on the boat, then release at sea. 😂come in number six.

This will also only apply to those over 3500kgs, ie P/HGV, this is one of the downsides of upplating your motorhome!

Just had reply to my email query to international port access

You can zoom in on the map to see if your route will be in the CAZ.
The international port can be accessed from the M275 without entering the zone.
