Oil heater

Contemplating buying a small oil filled radiator for my camper, saw some as low as 500w but I worry how efficient they would be, any advice on what wattage is appropriate.

I use one for winter storage ,,it keeps the damp away ,,,when you open the door ,it aint that warm ,,but it keeps the frost at bay

Electric Heater

Many years ago we bought a Dimplex 500w convector. Cold watcher we still use it now it has a frost setting which we use at home when leaving the van on hook up it warms up quicker than an oil heater and is a bit more compact you can wall fix it use it standing up or laying down

I use one on hook up at home on the coldest nights to minimise condensation and generally keep plastic trim from getting too brittle. It only seems to need an hour or two on bad nights to just take the edge off deep frosts.

A tubular greenhouse heater will do the same job and many years ago as a youngster, I used a 60w bulb in a metal biscuit tin for keeping my photographic developer solution at the right temperature. So there are low cost solutions too.

The beauty with oil filled rads is they are cheap (check out Argos for good selection). Whilst full timing in a Chieftain I have three in order to prolong the life of the electric element of the vans fire. I have a 500w in cab and two 800w, lounge/kitchen. I'm very cosy.

Quite a good price here as well

1 in the lounge area and 1 in the rear garage area and use them on a mid-way setting when the temperature drops.

I keep the van loaded all year round and these keep it aired quite well.

Don`t forget to open all the drawers / cupboards / doors so the warmth gets everywhere.

I've just bought one of these, a bit on the big side perhaps but I think it will be better than the convector heater I was using to keep the van frost free whilst its sat on my drive in winter.

I have used a500w oil heater. It was okay in April, prefer my 750 w1.5.w Ceramic fan heater, heats the van up faster and I don't find the noise to bad, at night the thermostat regulates the temp, smaller and lighter unit .seen them as cheap 15 quid. Ours is about 8 years old still okay.our van is 18.5 ft I know the fan heater is okay on 750w in sub zero temp. Stay warm. bazz

Some site EHU's are low current so you will need something no bigger than 800w or you'll be tripping the power everytime you put something else on.

wrong when you turn down a heater you are in fact turning it of and on by reostat so when it comes on for a while its burning its full load and willl trip site hook up ,only usefull at side of house from your own power sockets.

There are plenty of oil filled radiators with thermostats, timers and individual switches so you can select varying outputs. These do not work on Rheostats and are more efficient.

good post david but infra red is light spectrum ,m wave is in radio spectrum about 2400 mhz.any thing above about 1000 mhz will give your brain a right burning,even touching the antena of a tranmiter will burn my callsine mi1 dti radio ham.

lide are doing a lecy rad at £40 two elements inside rather than reostat giving .500 w 1000w & 1.500w,so you could use it at site hookup or at home ,no its on the big side think 70 long 52 h 40w hope this helps.

yes you are right but the wattage out put is so low no danger or so they tell us david,we will find out in about 30 years when its mybe to late and are heads are pickled,do me no harm as im permantely pickled hic:wave:

They're great a keeping the van dry and warm when not in use, provided you have EHU

Doesn't sound like the oil filled radiators are up to much on a chilly evening. Electric fan or halogen it is then, thanks for all the advice.
