Oh dear

It does look like a turbo failure, running on it's own oil, I would have tried stalling it, blocking the air intake isn't very easy on modern vans and the recommended fire extinguisher for a motorhome is dry powder I think, most likely outcome is a big bang either due to piston giving out or big end failure and con rod breaking either way an expensive repair.

Only seen it happen once , caused by over filling engine oil .some deisel runaway vidio on youtube

You’d want to shut that down pretty quick, if turning off the ignition wouldn’t stop it then hand brake on, door of brakes and select top gear before flying off the clutch.

Worse case you could just continue watching Top Gear 😉

happened on my renault megane 1.6 tdi.I was in between jobs on a freezing day parked up in a morrisons car park with the engine running to keep warm.
It was sucking up oil and would have run to destruction had I not stalled it.I cooled it down ,put in some oil and drove it home.Fine after that.

Take t shirt off and stuff down the exhaust before the engine seizes up once the turbo uses all the engine oil

had similar happen twice on Bedfords . luckily i knew from a mate ,just stay calm ,pull off the air pipe and block the intake . doesn't half make your heart race though !

Am I being daft here, I'm no mechnic but can't the ignition be switched off?

The ignition will have already been switched off, the turbo has most likely blown a seal and it is sucking the oil out of the sump and running off that.
The only way is to either stall it or block its air supply,
I certainly wouldn’t keep sticking my head under the bonnet like he does, as that engine is about to start throwing rods out

Had a runaway on our last narrowboat, I was standing alongside it in the 'engine bay'. I had just been checking the stern gland at the start of the season and thought I might as well fire up the engine while I'm here. When I realised what was happening, I jammed a rag in the air filter and turned off the fuel, but scarey at the time because I was stuck alongside the engine. (I have worked in diesel engine test shops and seen what a lump of crankcase can do!). Found out later that the fuel pump rack had stuck.

similar with the bedfords , the rack comes off the rail . first time was on the motorway ,at night ,pouring rain ,freezing cold, thick smoke and flames out the back family evacuated to hard shoulder ,freezing cold . true misery . no breakdown of course took about half an hour to sort it .

I'd just topped up oil , drove down road and slowed down for traffic lights and off it went.
Turned key off and £$%^ myself, told everybody to get out and run around not knowing what to do.
Got back in put it in 3rd gear and off clutch and it stopped.
Very very scary
