Number plates & reflector boards on bike racks

I have just had a FIAMMA bike rack fitted to my 'Autosleeper Executive'.
With the folded up the number plate is entirely visible but when it is folded down and loaded, the numberplate, which is recessed, breaks the rule about being visible from an angle 15 degrees above the bottom of the plate so I have made a second rear numberplate and fixings which solves the problem.
However when travelling in Europe I have noticed several units with red & white diagonally striped boards mounted at the rear of the bikes that have reflectors (red?) at each corner.
Are such boards required in Europe?

If you go to the Northern Motorhome show that is on next week you will be able to buy an aluminum one for £6 like we did at The Great Escape last month

I was also told in Portugal they had to be metal (rightly or wrongly) but for only £6 why give plod an excuse to pull you;)

I think it's only certain countries that require marker boards for Any Overhang such as Italy. UK HGV's require them for width and overhang (Police who use C&U regs - Not VOSA), but are not so hot for PLG providing you can still see vehicle lights and number plate.

These red an white boards are only for Italy.
No matter plastic or metal as long they have reflectors.
Not compulsuary but they are OK for the rest of the EU.

There have been many arguments over plastic versus metal. The plastic ones from Fiamma with 4 reflectors are Ok in Europe. Cost I think £6 less 5% wildcampers discount
