Had one today & after they hung up (I often try to see how long I can keep them on before they hang up) After a call today I did the 1471 to see if there was a number, instead of the usual I got an american automated message 'there is a semantic error in the application' When I did a search of this message I found that if you dial 1477 the call is logged as a malicious call, with Talktalk they list the steps below

  1. Dial 1477 during or immediately after the unwanted call. You need to do this on five separate calls. When you do this, we trace the call.
  2. Contact the Police let them know about the malicious call and that you have traced the call with TalkTalk.
  3. The Police will contact TalkTalk's Police Liaison team.
So if you get a lot of these you can do something about it, personally I find I never get calls from the same ones.

I guess there are some lonely folks out there who would welcome a phone call, any phone call, so they get to chat to someone. I heard a bloke on our local radio say he was so lonely that when a Jehovah's Witness called he asked him in, gave him a seat in the lounge and asked "Well what do we do now?", the Jehovah's Witness answered "I don't know, I've never got this far before".

two things i like to do,one is to let them go on a bit then say, sorry mate sounds well dodgy to me. this provokes a number of interesting reactions, last one just said;for farks sake and slammed the phone down!another old trick is to ask them to explain a bit more, then put the phone on the table,on speakerphone, then when they've said hello? a couple of times, apologise, say there was someone at the door and you missed all that, could they please repeat?as soon as they start speaking, say sorry mate sounds well dodgy to me,and put the phone down.simple pleasures.

I usualy say "If you can give me your card details and tell me how much you want to donate. and Is the donation going to be regular? i.e. monthly , annually ?" they usually don't ring back.:lol-053:

The trouble is your number ends up on a circulation list, especially if you have actually bought something. Sales people
are allowed to call you if you have been in contact with them within so many days, so the first call they make unless
you specifically tell them not to call back (even then no guarantee)...seems to be a given as 'contact'.

...the biggest problem is overseas call centres getting your number...then while UK firms may quit, these call centres
go to town...as far as I know when you pay your fee it entitles the CPR to the records of your received calls which they then
pursue to see which firm is behind the harassment and they take them to court....

I can't remember exactly how it all fits together...it's explained on the site...but it works...no home or overseas sales calls.

Explain politely that you're about to rupture their eardrums and give them a blast of a screech alarm...

We don't have a Land line, just Mobiles so get no nuisance calls, when we did have a land line and got nuisance calls, [ from someone just trying to earn a living ] we just said politely, no thanks we are not interested and hung up.

Hi,

You should register with the "Telephone Preference Service", it's Free - stops 99% of sales calls.

There is also one for Junk mail - Mail Preference Service - also Free

It takes a few weeks for these to become effective but they really do work.

I agree with Matthew on this, "TPS" is the way to go, however it does not stop the "Offshore" calls.

I have very few canvasing calls now it does take time however.

If it is a 'genuine' sales call from a reasonable company just trying to 'earn a living' & calling because we have left our details on some marketing, we politely tell them we aren't interested & could they remove us from their list. The ones that annoy me are the ones which are obvious scams & to me they are fair game to waste their time.

We are signed up to both the TPS & MPS but these only stop the genuine marketing calls/posts.

If letters arrived on your mat and lay there screaming until you picked them up, most people would probably stamp on them. If I get spam, the spam filter gets it, if I get junk mail, the dog eats it, If some chancer calls my ex directory number they get no sympathy.

This is not really a good idea because most calls which come from schools, hospitals, doctors surgeries, police stations or any office exchange come up as withheld numbers. You also have to actually look at the phone to work out it is a withheld number which is a pain when you have hands full of flour from baking or are on the toilet.
