Not so wild camping

Now I know this is a wild camping site and I joined because I want to wild camp but for my first trip in a campervan, I thought I may go to a site. I hope this is not considered bad form by all you wild campers. I wondered if any of you experienced folk may know of a site to meet our criteria. We don't like luxurious sites with all the whistles and bells, rather casual, friendly sites with just tents and small campers. No ehu needed. In fact a field with a tap and loo is sufficient. I have a minute little camper with a 970cc engine so very steep approaches may be beyond us. Also suspension seems pretty poor so really rough,pot-holed tracks could be tricky. We're hoping to find a level spot beside water-sea,lake or river but if sea, with a dog friendly beach. A dog friendly pub fairly near would be a bonus. We love places where you can play acoustic guitar around a camp fire. We live in London so somewhere in the south or midlands would do. I'd be most grateful for any suggestions if indeed such a place exists.:D

Sounds like my kind of thing also.........;) There is a quaint little campsite in staplecross hastings that is very basic although you can make a fire and your left to your own devices. It was one of or first campsite we styed on and I dont think it ever has any more than couple of tents and campers on it at a time. I am not sure about pubs etc but I knw when we stayed last year it was vey cheap

Mandymops ...its called 'Upper morgay woods' staplecross hastings.....its fab !!!

You could try here The campsite at Basingstoke Canal Centre

As a long term supporter of the restoration of the Basingstoke Canal, I'd encourage you to give it a try.

Lots of dog walking potential in the area, not just by the canal.

It's not strictly a commercial venture either - the fees go towards the cost of running the canal authority who maintain the canal.

That's the one

Thanks, that is the one I was looking at Him and Herbenny.

Have you thought about joining the Caravab Club and using their 2500 CL sites network? between £3 (a field, a tap, a bin if you lucky and waste disposal) and £15, EHU, showers etc.

They are brilliant. Mainly on farm and rural spots, some near or actually at pubs

Yes the CL's are pretty good. There are not so many places that will let you light a fire though if you can keep it raised off the grass with a barrel BBQ or similar. Herbenny's place sounds good.

It really was a nice place Firefox....probably will go back at some point. The chickens torment the life out of you but we just showed them paxo and they soon got the gist !!!!;)

Certified location.

It just means that the site has been inspected and approved, they normally have room for only half a dozen campers. You don't need to be certified to stay on them :)

OK,I'm new to this. What does CL site stand for?

Certified Location

Sites owned by farms, pubs, nurseries etc. 5 Vans only (Caravans or motorhomes). Generally between 1/4 of an acre of land up to several acres. There are 2500 within the network. You have to be a caravan club member to visit them. Some are dirt cheap like £3 a night to £7 a night without hookup and basic facilites. They are between £6-£15 a night for ones with hookup and at the top end sometimes showers and toilets.

USually very informal and away from it all. We love them. The Caravan and Camping club also has a similar CS (certified site) network but not as many as the CC.

Its worth joining the CC just for these (never been on one of their campsites) and you also get enough discounts on days out and ferries to justify the £40 membership fee.

Thanks

Great, I didn't know about them. I shall certainly join on the strength of that. Just what I'm after. Thanks:dance:

It's worth looking at the Camping and Caravanning Club too mandymops - we are members and they hold meets every week and have temporary holiday sites all through the summer, these are really cheap. They are a really relaxed and friendly lot.

as for lighting a fire guys as said it needs to be off the ground, so what a lot of people do to get around this is you get the stainless steel drum out of an old washing machine bolt on three legs and you have an instant raised fire pit (loads of these at the festivals) hope this helps
