We passed through several overhead number plate readers for road tolls in Norway, you can pay the tolls in certain fuel stations if you can find the ones that take the tolls, we never found one, you can also register a credit / debit card at the said fuel stations too, I would not do that personally, or you will be sent a bill at your home address according to the blurb we got from tourist information offices, so we thought that our best option as there are no additional charges or penalties or so they said. Well we are now home and sure enough we have a bill for about £11 for three tolls we incured, the money is payable on line, by post or phone at an English bank in London, no excess charge and billed in Sterling to save any additional cost with exchange rates, the letter states. how civilised is that. Tolls were also not payable on Sundays either.:cool1:

Road tolls in Norway.

We intend to tour Norway for three months stating in at the beginning of May 2012. We intend going up the west coast as far as the border with Finland, maybe we might venture into Finland. We would like to be as far north as possible to experience 'The Midnight Sun' on the 21st June 2012. Would you be able to recommend the best way to get there and would you have any tips for us? Since the Newcasle DFDS serviced closed a couple of summers ago there doesn't look like there are many options.
We have a 24foot motorhome, Eura Mobil Contura 705 and a dog!
Any advice from anyone would be greatly received.
You could if you wish email me at marshdc2 at yahhoo dot co dot uk.
Many thanks,
David.

Hi Folks, well the route we took was through, Fr, Blgm. Holl. Germ. to Putgarden in Germany where we got the Ferry [ just turn up no booking ] to Robyhaven in Denmark, 84 euros for my tag axle Hymer 7.7 mtrs. we then drove to Copenhagen with several stop overs, we spent the night on the Harbour outside of City Camp motorhome stop over for free as City Camp was closed till June. after a day and night in Copenhagen we drove to Helsinger Denmark for the ferry to Helsinborg Sweden, [ no booking just turn up, very frequent service ] 88 euros for this one, pay by cash or card.we had the Vicarious book of Aires and stopovers of Scandinavia and found it great, no problems wild camping or aires any where.we drove up through Sweden to Ostersend with lots of stop overs in some really super places. 8 night stops in total. From Ostersend we took a back road via Krokom [SW] all the way to Norway entering Norway nr a place called Grong,[ We saw no Customs whatsoever so all the tales of what you can and cannot take in to Norway did not seem to matter, the same leaving Norway, no Customs at all ] We then made our way to the Artic Circle where we had a nights stopover at the Visitor Centre, a permitted overnight stop over place, fabulous and the snow was 12 - 20 feet deep, roads were perfect[this was May 16th.2011.] not cold surprisingly enough. [we had 4 stopovers before the Artic Circle.}we then made our way to Saltstraunem to see the Malestrom, fiercest tidal flow and whirlpools ever, 400 million cubic metres of water flow every 6 hours a sight to behold as when the tide turns the flow stops and the waters become flat calm [ Google the Saltstraunem Maelstrom ]from there after a free stop over [camp site here if you want one ] we made our way to Fauske [a free night stop over here if you want one, we had now come as far North as we wanted and turned South on the E6, don't be fooled by the E6, it's no Motoorway just a bumpy double carraigeway road and narrow in places and lorries come at you like suicide drivers but all was well.We took in Trondheim, and on to Tingvoll, we crossed the 3000 mile on the speedo today since leaving home We drove some truly spectacular roads hairpin bends and mega steep, but that's what we like doing, we walked on two Glaciers called in at Geiranger and had a three hour each way Fjord trip fabulous, we went to Flam and rode the Flam Railway superb, saw Elk and lots of Reindeer, We returned to Sweden via LOM,GAUPNE.GOLL.and MOSS all scenic back roads, crossing into Sweden nr.HENAN SATEN we passed the 4000 mile mark today.we then drove through Sweden with stops at Trollhatten. Orkelljunga, stopping frequently and overnighting, we made our way to the ORESUND bridge and tunnel and crossed for 80 euros we again made lots of stop overs and then crossed the Great Belt Bridge at a cost of 46 euros, so the cost of bridges were close to the Ferry crossing prices, over all.We then made our way towards Germany Niebull, Heide,Friedrichskoog,Brokdorf,GluckstadtWedel,BuxtenhudeAnd Bremerhaven, then on to Nordenham,Elsfleth.Hoya am Weser ,Nieburg, Stolzenau,Minden,Rinteln Hameln [Pied Piper Fame] Bodenwerder Hofgeismar Hann Munden [must see place]Witzenhansen, etc etc, we followed the River Weser and what iscalled the Fairy Tale route trough Germany,[GRIMMS FAIRY TALES] great info from tourist offices in English, stop overs at all places, this seems to be a part of Germany ignored by Britts, as we saw no others, it's a great area to visit , we then made our way through Belgium lofs of great stopovers again and back to Gravelines France Aire again for a couple of nights and then to Calais for the Ferry, a truly remarkable trip, one that I have left a lot out of , Stave Churches Glaciers Waterfalls raging rivers, mountain passes, beautiful Fjords and stunning scenery , friendly people good food etc.etc, we did 6400 miles in total but we don't go in straight lines. If I can offer any more info feel free to contact me, Regards Malc.

Hi follow this link as this couple are have been through Norway recently

Europe By Camper

Rob

In 2007 we did the trip North, up through Norway, down through Finland, into Sweden then back into Norway. We had no plan, bought the Norwegian National Trust Guide and just wandered visiting places that interested us from the Guide, until we reached Nordkapp. Stayed a few nights in camp sites the rest of the time we wild camped in anything from WWII fort to Troll house laden mountain top near a glacier. The scenery is stunning.

Pulpit Rock if you are fit enough is a must, its a very hard climb.
Isfjord (sp?)
Road into Isjabotn with its 20 plus hairpins and base jumpers
Lofoten Islands - try swimming hehe
Sami museums and parliament
Spiral tunnel whose location escapes me
Waterfalls everywhere you become blase about 500m water drops
Reindeer the buggers are everywhere once inside the polar circle, sitting on bits of snow
sock knitting museum near Bergen - I like weird steam powered machinery
hitch hikers - pick em up and have a great time with a few locals

What to avoid - salted fish - I nearly had a heart attack after eating a piece.
Restaurants out of the major cities - food is expensive and bland - or contains parts of a Reindeer that you dont want to think about :)

Finland and Sweden are a bit disappointing after Norways rugged scenery and we went back into Norway by some little used dirt roads.

I felt very humbled by the Scandanavians grasp of the English language - even the smallest shop and the checkout chick would speak to us in English. We got stopped twice in Norway with ex pat Aussies wanting to have a chinwag!!
