Hi all I am thinking of taking a trip to northern Spain in September driving down through France going via Rouen Le Mans Poitiers Bordeaux San Sebastian does this sound like a good route to take ? and can anyone give me an idea what kind of weather to expect in Northern Spain any info would be helpful and much appreciated as this is my first trip.
Thanks

Hi.
There are a few different good routes and they all end up in the same place.
I think that I have used them all.
I now prefer Rouen, Evreux, Dreux, Chatres,Orleans and from there a few more choice routes, maybe Limoges or Potiers
When you say Northern Spain, do you mean Atlantic Spain or the Barcelona side.
Weather will be better on the Med side but for us the Atlantic side is much nicer.
Enjoy

hi. i say forget france just take the long ferry and spend more time in the best part of spain. expect t shirt weather maybe put a sweatshirt on . ***** knows my views . that top coast is fantastic . go inland to the pico,s brilliant. for me in a truck the fuel through france is more expensive than the ferry. but can i come with you i love that coast. hee hee.

Hi Alan.
I agree with you that in your situation it is cost effective to get the Spanish Ferry as you can get it from Plymouth, but for many of us up north or even in the south east it is an expensive luxury.
It most certainly is not cost effective for me when I can get a return ferry for £54

hi. how much to drive through france though now. yes for me the cheap ferries are 350ml away. even plymouth roscoff is expensive. my mate from scotland says its still cheaper for him to catch same as me. also wear n tear . but yes we only do 16/18 mpg. but i also like to b in spain tomorrow. i used to like france but prefer that coast to ther drive down. i just feel so relaxed to be there. cheers alan.

Hi and thanks for your answers chaps I don't live far from Dover or Ramsgate so that is my best way over the water
I will definitely be looking at the route you suggested ***** and just take a slow drive down roll on September

We've been a couple of times to Northern Spain, before we got the van - it's a beautiful area, well worth visiting.

But I think you'd need to keep a waterproof handy to go over that t-shirt! We got the hint the first time we went, with a trailer tent, to a coastal town right on the Cantabria/Asturias border - drove through the town and all the tourist shops were selling rain ponchos where you'd normally expect t-shirts to be hanging!

Glorious area - very changeable weather - or maybe we've just been unlucky??

good point . i just take it most wilders do have a lighweight rain jacket handy. its not the green area of spain for nothing.
can say have been swimming in dec and jan , it can be warm even in winter if right by the coast. being atlantic its always changeable . portugal etc all suffer the same . even morocco as some rather windy days . but solwayb is right pack a raincoat. cheers alan.

You will enjoy the trip down through France whichever way you choose. Stay off the peage and get the book of Aires if you don't already have it.

*****'s route from Calais-Rouen-Chatres is great with plenty of nice stopovers.

Although I've not done it yet, I would be tempted to take VWAlan's advice one time just to try it but personally like taking a week or so to get there at a nice leisurely pace, so it's not just a question of which is cheapest, for me. Also we took the plunge and have the frequent traveller option with Eurotunnel which works out cheap if you make regular trips. Just turn up and go, no waiting for ferries.
