I had an email from AIB yesterday. There are a few references about it online if you search

We’re in NI at the moment and will be returning home from Dublin. I renewed our European breakdown cover just before we left. Lifesure told us we still needed a green card and our insurer (AXA) emailed it through with the policy.

You’d have thought between them they would have know about this?

A green card hasn't been required for several years.it is only since ****** that it has been needed. Nothing to do with being able to read English, it is an extension to your insurance.

Whats it for then? The ones I,ve had only appeared to be translations saying that my ins cert complys with their requirements. Spent 3 hrs once trying to convince the border gaurds my white one was ok

Insurance certificates have had the translation on them for several years. Before ****** that was all you needed for most of Europe.
Since ****** you have needed a green card confirming that you have Insurance for Europe. This won't be needed soon. You will still have the translation on the back of the certificate.
Border guards vary, you were probably unlucky.
