No escape for drivers caught abroad

Surely this is a good thing, as most of us are law abiding and road legal, the persuit of law breakers cross borders will be to our benefit as long as we learn the rules of the road for the coutries we visit and stick to them. Its a shame that british authorities dont persue (persecute) foreign drivers as much as domestic ones, plus I am currently in spain where drivers dont seem to know or at least adhere to their own rules. rnt over for now chris.

No escape for drivers abroad

I know for a fact, that in Germany, you can pay on the spot fines for traffic offences. If you don't have the money, you have to give your bank details against proof of ID. If not your car is impounded until the amount is paid + tow away and storage charges.

well well

Hi all, there as been a french police check at dunkirk for some time, He checks if you have any outstanding finds etc, before you board the ferrie. And its pay up time if you have. I have not seen this at any other port when returning to the UK. But have been told by my french mates that the police have taken to pulling over UK drivers for all sorts of things. Make sure that you watch out for speed cameras, and keep in mind that the french also use a moving van set up with the camera set up in the rear window, if you overtake it they got you. Also cameras are set up in pairs, one fixed, and one in car or motorbike a bit further down the road. My partner got done for being 4kms over the 50km limit. the fixed fine was 60 euros and one point.
So take care, and also have all your paperwork to hand, Big brother is all around us, and he wants YOUR MONEY.

How times have changed

Reading your post re being stopped and getting a lift to the bank, how times have changed. Several years ago we were on our way to Paris from Amsterdam to take part in the "Paris 6 hour" powerboat race. Crossing the border into France near Lille, we were stopped at customs, and unfortunately our carnets didn't include our tools. We were fined, from memory, something like £400. Because we didn't have that amount of cash on us, they wouldn't let us move. They wouldn't take plastic or a cheque, or take us to the bank. We had to wait there until some friends came along.................................................7hours later. Don't you just love the French!!!!! Like you, Graham/Kath, we still go back with our motorhome, as we also love it.

Hi Cipro, am using an internet cafe ATM but i am trying to rig up an ariel to hijack loose open networks whilst inside the van, using cellphone connection is just too expensive. are you full timing or in spain currently, I am returning to UK shortly as I need to sort out some things in my van but will probably only stay a month or so as I want to hit the mountains and then Italy for spring. happy motoring. chris.

Boats

Hi Boatman, What a small world, I was into boats in a big way and I was in the first ever cross channel waterski race. It was in either 1966 or 1967. Think it was 67.
Did not do too well as boat got swamped in force 6.
Always wanted to see the Paris 6 hr. We were a rescue boat in the late 60,s for the Chasewater 24 hr.
Have competed in offshore Millendreath nr Looe to Plymoputh & back. Did ok & picked up a few prizes.
B4 trucking I was in the marine trade for 20 yrs, just got a little fed up of all the discounting & it really spoilt it as a hobby.
I was eating, drinking, & sleeping boats, it just got too much!!!!!!

Yes u have got to stay away from french police & customs. Give them a wide berth.

When I first started international truck driving permits were required for each journey, and they were rationed (short supply). Not as now since borders have come down every tom dick & harry can do it. Anyway on my 3rd journey I had a 4 journey permit with very very faint lines blanking it out to a 2 journey permit. I knew no better & tried to use it for my 3rd journey. When I went to clear customs I got fined £100 approx even though it was a genuine mistake & I offered to use a new permit which I had with me.

Regarding a Carnet. Again after borders came down I collected machinery (on a carnet)from Bilbao exhibition centere. I went to Irun to get it stamped and no one knew how to do it & I had to show them. All the older custom officers had retired.

We must talk more about boats later
regards Graham/kath

Thanks for the reply, no I am not fulltiming though I wish I could but RESPECT to you and others that do.By the way I read that if you had a lap top you can buy like a internet receiver with a sim card built in and you plug it in the side I know it is a bit vague. Perhaps someone else nows a little bit more info. All the best and travel safe.

Yes there is a card that plugs into the side of the laptop (also there are some USB ones too. The catch is the tariffs but competition particularly in the UK is driving prices down. You can get on one network for about £30 month a data volume (not time) based tariff -not time which has an allowance for overseas. Think its 3 or possibly T mobile

fines

Hi G, on the spot fines, well if you have UK plates on your motorhome, a nd are pulled over by the police, you can be made to pay on the spot. Nowever if its speeding by camera then at the moment it depends what port you leave france from, if its dunkque its pay before you leave france, and theres a little policeman at the port who takes your money. Other ports you are OK.
Always carry your paperwork nowdays in france, also a yellow refect jacket, and triangle etc. if the police pull you over and you don,t have a yellow jacket its an on the spot fine.

Hope you made it before the ferries were stopped due to the weather!
