Newhaven Beach Sussex ?

Does anyone know the story about Newhaven beach, why has it been closed ?. I seem to recall something about the French have bought it ?. Just curious as we used to go there often when we lived at Burgess Hill. We took our grandson there this weekend with the mother-outlaw and would have liked to walk along the breakwater.
