 Hi Guys

We've always stayed on sites in the UK, but in our late 40's and wanting an adventure, a few of us ageing surfers wish to go to Brittany in September. One of the group laughs in the face of campsites. He insists that all will be OK and that wild camping will not get us hassle form the authorities.

Wotcha think?

Brittany is one of the most camper-friendly parts of Europe I think and there are many places were you can stay overnight legally without paying, or for a small fee.

I’m sure you can get information about all these sites. I do have them but they are in Dutch so probably no good to you.
Try getting the Facile en Route Camper guide 2006 or even better, the Le Guide Des Aires de Services Camping-cars. The last one cost somewhere in the area of 7 euros and hosts 1700 places to stay overnight.

I think you will have a great trip ahead of you. :)

No need to wild camp in Brittany, there are plenty of aires where it is possible to stay overnight. The guide book mentioned can be bought in France or if you want to look at it before you go ,the Camping club sell it.Most aires are free some make a small charge. We've stayed on places with free water, disposal points and even free electric! The towns and villages that provide these facilities ask you to use the local shops.

Hi Surfrelic,You will have no probs in France on Aires, take a look at this site, you can buy the CD ok if you speak French!www.campingcars-infos.com,if you know where your going plan your route and print them off, cheers Gerry.

If only our own councils were so enlightened.
we should start a campaign to enlighten them..
maybe a representation to them from a local supporter with a document about aires in france we prepared in advance would help.
any volunteers. I would do it but am up to eyeballs in stuff at the moment...
but I would be delighted to take a doc to the council here..
are there any facts and figures available on increased trade from motorhomers in france?

hi roy , i admire your faith in local councils to see sense. i find the beaurocracy to much to handle.if anything would change their minds it might be the mighty £ sign and the thought of extra revenue. i'm more inclined to use a pot of paint to change the signage to "overnight parking".whats the fine for defacing public property?

sorry wrong thread and i don,t have a clue how to move it.

no it wasn't the wrong thread. O.K. i've had a hard weekend .

I would not say I have ANYfaith at all in local councils to see any sort of sense.

In a country where you have to get permission to do anything to your own property and there are rules for everything [our fault. we elect professional politicians and they have to prove they are needed by making up rules] I do not expect any freedom. and the few freedoms we have left are eroded daily. no, no confidence in them at all.
it might make us feel better tho..

Hi, Many thanks to Cornelius Apr 15 2006, and others hanging by the same thread, for the advice about Brittany. I once met a Frenchman from Marseille who asked me "why would you go to Bretagne? it is the same as Gran Bretagne!" Perhaps that's how Bretagne looks from Marseille but I still want to go there. I did set out for Bretagne once but as we rolled of the Le Havre ferry I handed the navigation over to my wife and very quickly I found we weren't heading for Bretagne, we were heading south. Now, my wife is a good navigator so - cautiously - I asked "were are we going?". "Monet's Garden then the The Loire valley". Then I remembered, that had been mentioned a few months earlier. Needless to say we did the Loire Valley and the Dordoigne Valley and had a fantastic "wild" trip. And I we still have Bretagne to look forward to.
