anyone know of a cheap MH for sale, preferabley RWD and diesel. gotta be real low price so i can restore the mechanical side of things to ensure reliability; cant risk breaking down in the middle of nowhere as my wife is disabled.

Does it have to be a motorhome or would a campervan do? When you say really cheap, what sort of figure are you talking?

Consider petrol and do a LPG conversion. Then you're going to be safe from the LEZ's as the London idea is
bound to be adopted elsewhere soon.

have to think bout lpg viktor; rather fancy goin to the wilds of europe, an have heard not so many remote petrol stations always do lpg. as for LEZs ; we will be staying well away from cities, grew up in one, lived in one; aint holidaying in one !!

The LPG conversion means you still keep your petrol tank and can use petrol if you run out of LPG, it's just
it drops automatically over to LPG when you have it (at 75p litre).

I always consider a campervan more the minibus converted; a motorhome the bigger 'caravan with an engine' if that makes sense.

My best tips would be don't go for outward appearance, but for internal condition. We just sold our Mercedes 207D Autotrail (1985) for £2000. It had just had all new body panels, the engine was 100% reliable, chasis solid, but the 'caravan bit' was tatty on the outside. Inside was gorgeous, exceedingly comfortable and most importantly bone dry. As there were no leaks we didn't try and knock out any dings in the bodywork for fear we create leaks. This stopped loads of people buying it as they wanted something that looked lovely and didn't seem to care if it leaked! The person that bought it drove it all the way back to his home ........in Spain!!!!!!!! It didn't miss a beat and they're chuffed to bits with it.

Our first one looked good, but the owner / rip off merchant had done a VERY clever job of covering up damp and making it inaccessible using carpet. Beware the smell of air freshener! It might be hiding a different musty smell.

Plenty of campervans around at that price - E Bay (often a bit pricy, Gumtree, AdTrader, FreeAds, Caravan Club classifieds) plus plenty I'm sure I've forgotten. Don't be in a rush for £2K you should get something pretty good.

recently on ebay been some nice cheap VW LT's the older box shape like mine.

selling for next to nowt really for what they were. petrol and diesels. myself would go diesel route, unless it had the lpg conversion already done

Some use MH to describe a coachbuilt and campervan to describe a metal panelvan conversion.

Panel van conversions have less space and don't always contain such things as a separate shower room. But... they can do and can have all the facilities as a coachbuilt. Hence some panel vans could be described as motorhomes too. Still confused?!!

They all depreciate slowly... best to look in ebay and local newspapers or car traders to see what is available.

If you are handy, consider buying an older base vehicle and converting it yourself. Scrap donor caravan is the cheapest route.

Don't expect to pick up a good one with everything working for less than £2000 or £3000 unless you are extremely lucky. Things like fridges, cookers, sinks, boilers, batteries, and rooflights are expensive to buy new and can have quite a resale potential even if the vehicle itself is scrap.

buy ex local authority van ,dont know how disabled wife is but if she in wheel cahir then ucan pick them up with tail liftand do coversion with caravan for the item you need ,they generally been serviced and well looked after,

Why RWD as you will be limiting your choice ?
Often FWD have lower load area floors so easier access for disabled.

There are lots of advantages to FWD. Weight and traction over front wheels for sticky situations and lower load space compartment floor are just two.

But the older vans tend to be RWD and you are limited by budget so it may have to be RWD.

thanks

thanks for everyone who took the trouble to reply. i'm a bit old fashioned and have always driven RWD cars up until last ten years, and it seems to me they are more troublesome in the drivetrain area, trouble is most MH's seem to be FWD, so maybe i'll have to get something like a talbot; lots of those on ebay, but not for my price range alas. wish i'd been on here when caspar sold his merc; ripped his arm off i would !!!

Consider where

The LPG conversion means you still keep your petrol tank and can use petrol if you run out of LPG, it's just
it drops automatically over to LPG when you have it (at 75p litre).

Fuel prices vary from country to country. Diesel is only about 50 pence per litre in the Russian Federation.
If you plan to travel outside of UK, _seriously_ consider going for LHD - might be cheap to buy such in UK. Having restricted view of oncoming traffic when behind a slow truck can get tiresome :-(
