A while back there was a post on this Forum about an adapter to refill gas bottles, with a pressure gauge. The post has a link to an ebay forum, but its long gone. Anyone know where I can find one. Searched ebay with no success.

a pressure gauge doesn't tell you how much gas is in a bottle , so avoid anyway

gas bottle adapter

i would have no hesitation using one of these adapters(that's if the garages will let you)

it says on the adapters how much gas in litres for each size of bottle.

remember to make sure the bottle is empty,by taking it out and opening the valve.

then when filling fill up to 80% of the capacity, 13kg bottle is 26 litres knock off 20% 5.2 litres leaves 20.8 litres.

good luck:eek:

13kg is already the 80% of the bottle capacity

gas bottle adapter

hi bill
if that's the case i stand erected:tongue:

What a cool idea, I've got one yellow tank (Gaslow) and one red, this will save me getting another yellow tank at £140+ :)

cant understand anybody actually buying gaslow.
but then who on earth thought ordinary bottles wwerewnt refillable. hee hee.
have a spanish cepsa here says it holds 26litres or 12.5kg, all stamped on the bottle.

who says its not legal? you can have a fixed filler for just a few quid. dont need gaslow for that. been having fixed fillers way before gas low came out.

excuse my pignorance, how does the price of autogas compare to bottled gas, roughly?

Guilty as charged, milord.

Why did I buy Gaslow? Because I didn't know about these. Because I hear stories of tiny accidents (teensy weensy explosions) where people have done it wrong. Because I don't how bottles are constructed and with what safety devices. And because I pay to use someone else's expertise.

When I fill a Gaslow bottle, when the bottle is full, the pump stops.

What happens when you fill a non-Gaslow bottle?

on a 19kg bottle save about 6-7 quid. save more on the 13kg bottles . by the time you get to the very big ones you save nothing,
when the bottle is nearly full the pump should stop. at asbout 90%.
but ideally you fill from empty or by weight. the german m,home books sell spring balance scales just for weighing gas bottles . look in a reimo catalogue.

several places sell the body mounted filler then use the correct hose to the bottle . less than 50quid. might even do it for less. i used an old car filler from the 70,s have had it since the late 70,s uses the acme thread . just like meccano really. but the compact fillers on ebay work fine and you can fill lots of different size bottles with the right adaptors .
you could look on the gaslow or autogas sites . or many of the european catalogues.

In my ignorance, I will stick with Gaslow, I think. I will sleep easier.

2 days ago i saw a bloke at the garage near where i live,he was filling his 13kg bottle straight from the pump with one of those adaptors off ebay,,,he swears by it,saving him about 8 quid a bottle,it tells you on the adaptor how much gas to put in your particular sized bottle (24 litre/13kg bottle),easy..i've had lpg on my transit van for 6 years, dead easy to use and fill and from what i saw filling the bottle is no different...i carry 2x13kg's anyhow,so when one empties, couple the full one up and fill the empty one at the next available lpg pump...
bottled gas is around £1/litre (£24-£25 for a 13kg refill which holds approx 24 litres) .......... gas at the pump near me is 60p litre.
so in effect theres around a 30% premium for having your bottle filled,,,
hopefully many are wary of using the adaptors which is good because all the garages and calor would soon put a stop to it if everyone was using them.!!!

Most if not all of the LPG garages in Northern Ireland have signs up prohibiting the filling of
domestic cylinders....I will check the garages in GB I'm in when I'm over this weekend.

I suspect the prohibition notices are going to be common in places in the UK.

cost saving depends on where you are

in spain you will pay more than swopping the bottle
in france it is about the same , a little more , a little less depending on the brand ; used to be more expensive to swop the bottle but own brands came in and broke up the cartel

in UK I presume you are ripped off by calor as they hold a monopoly position , a friend tells me he pays €23 for a 6Kg propane , in france I get the same size bottle with 9 Kg for €16.50 , and in spain a 6Kg butane is around €8 [ haven't bought one for a couple of years ..they don't sell propane in that size as it is not needed ]

alan will be along with the maroc prices just to upset you people in the UK !

hi, yes its getting expensive in morocco now. used to be £3 but as the pound fell it jumped tp £4.50p or 45 dirhams . their price didnt alter. 12kg bottle.
you can get regulators there for about £2 . a camping gas 907 bottle costsabout £1. i have bought new ones paid a deposit and had a single burner on the top all for £6. ideal again bring them home and sell them at carboots . got to be sworth £15.
its a strange but lovely world we live in.
