“PROPOSED 700% ROAD TAX INCREASE ON NEW MOTORHOMES
Written by Jack Penfold on 14th August 2019 Share
Anyone looking to buy a new motorhome either this autumn or next year should be aware of Government plans to change the classification of motorhomes from 1st September 2019.

This will result in a whopping 700% increase in the cost of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).

Ouch! The new rates will be as follows:

Before 1st September 2019 After 1st September 2019
VED on 1st registration £265 £2,125
VED following years £265 £465
The background to this is EU regulation 2018/1832 which requires that all new sales of Light Commercial Vehicles be subject to type approval and must provide a vehicle CO2 emissions figure. This means that from 1st September 2019 all new motorhomes under 3500kg will be taxed based on their emissions in the same way as cars.”

These new rates are happening petition or no petition.

Just curious but how will new motorhomes over 3500kg be taxed as we might be trading up in the future?

Although very possibly with a 2nd hand one so maybe these changes will not apply but still interested to know. How are larger motorhomes taxed at the moment?

It seems that new motorhomes over 3500kg will be still be classified as heavy goods vehicles and are not included in the new regime and so will attract VED of £165 per year.

We will be going to the NEC show in October so will be interesting to see how the dealers and manufacturers will be encouraging visitors to part with money given the new VED regime.

The heading in your OP is incorrect and needs changing.

This has been discussed in other threads and on other forums. AFAICT, the new scheme will only apply if the final certificate of conformity shows an emissions figure. So, even though all platform OEMs must give emissions figures, stage 2 converters don't need to and so the 'basic' VED will continue to be £265 (or whatever it increases to at each budget) for many/most new mohos. However, I'm not sure whether the additional levy for vehicles over £40k will apply.
