I'm really enjoying the new motorhome - apart from the dip in the mattress where the previous owner slept.

I'm not averse to a dip in the mattress, but when it's not quite the right shaped dip and it's not quite in the right place it can lead to restless nights.

So, I'm thinking of replacing it. It's one of those fixed bed type with one corner cut away.

Any suggestions on suppliers, what to look for, what to avoid? Comfortable/uncomfortable?

I think you mean a ‘french bed’ and mattresses are often on sale at that place in Hull I think i’s O’Leary Motorhome’s and you might get lucky and find it’s a standard manufacturers size.

A lot of DIY vans use IKEA mattresses. if you could get someone to cut it down it might work and would probably be the cheapest option. One advantage is that you can go and try the mattress out. For top end bespoke work Regal Furnishing https://www.regalfurnishings.co.uk/ would be a good choice. Buying off the internet is a bit hit and miss if you need a certain firmness of mattress/foam. I got mine from efoam.

Great! Thank you I'll look them up

That's a good shout AND my niece works at an Ikea! :)

I looked at some memory foam options. What thickness did you buy? Is it comfortable?
Yes very comfortable we bought 6". 4" base 2" memory foam we've since replaced mattress at Home with 8" 6x2 memory foam makes a bit of a pit to get out of
Something Like this comes rolled when you open it have room for it

You might consider https://jonic-uk.co.uk/product-category/mattresses/ or https://www.duvalay.co.uk/custom-mattresses/d-roll-mattress
Do be aware if specifying vehicle make and model that a different base vehicle can make a difference to the size of the bed and therefore mattress, fitted sheets, etc. For example, I bought fitted sheets for my Transit-based motorhome but they were too large; the company had almost certainly measured the beds on a Ducato-based version of the same make and model!

I've had a 20cm "ComfiCel" gel foam mattress from Custom Size Beds for the last couple of years. Not the cheapest (£399 if cut from a double-size mattress) but it's the best I've ever had and hard to get out of, especially on cold mornings.

They take your exact measurements, including odd shapes, like bottom left/right corner being cut out. You submit your measurements, and they send a drawing back for comfirmation before they actually cut it.

They can supply fitted sheets to match too.

Memory foan is all the rage, but if like me you sleep on your side, turning over from time to time in the night, i find that the "dip" i just moved from persists for some time.

I'm not sure if they still sell them but we have an Ikea Latex foam mattress which we too cut down to size with the leccy bread knife. It's not massively thick at around 100mm but it is really very comfy indeed and is very 'floppy' so it folds back readily to allow access to the under-bed storage. It does weigh an absolute ton so subtracts quite a lot from our payload but worth it for us because a decent nights sleep is high on our 'must haves'.
Some memory foam users report overheating but we've never experienced this with the latex mattress and there's no sag whatsoever. When we change van we'll be looking to fit the same as a priority.
