New Driving Licence

We've finally joined the modern world and updated our old paper UK driving licences to the wee pink card with mugshot.

Was wondering if we need to take the paper bit as well if we pop over to France etc.

What do you usually do?

Thanks in advance

Bev

Yes you do, Even here both parts of the licence have to be presented at Police stations etc and for proof of ID.

In effect you now have a two part licence and production of one part only can lead to problems simply on the basis there are two parts to the package.

I hope that makes sense

The answer is yes you do.
I had to see the Gendarmes a couple of years ago about an incident, and they said the photocard was not enough, luckily I had the paper one in the MH.

Happy Camping:)

Very efficient  instead of one nice little red booklet we carried we went to a larger green one that you could never fold properly to a card & still a green bit of paper that you always forget where you put it.

In the USA when we lived there in 1988 we had a nice plastic license with a colour picture, information on if we required glasses for driving, donor information etc... & it was accepted as identification anywhere in the state of California. It was all you ever need to carry & fitted nicely in your wallet.

That's what I like about this forum - from boring driving licences, through murder and onto religion in 10 easy steps! - well 10 replies then! :D

On the basis your question has been answered, and you will find abroad btw if you needed to rent a car both parts of the licence are required. I would like to share something on licences.

There are a few bikers here, and LGV drivers and perhaps you have heard the horror stories of sending licences away and them being returned minus entitlements well

After much pressure from the BMF and other motorcycle papers and lobby groups The DVLA will now return your old original licence to Motorcyclists, whenever a replacement licence is issued. The new procedure of punching a hole through the original licence to invalidate it has been introduced due to disputed entitlements over licence categories.

In the past motorcyclists have had real problems when they have had licences renewed and the motorcycle entitlement was removeed, and riders had a battle to prove they were entitled to it and have had real problems getting it re instated.. Now they will have some proof... the old licence. (Photo copies of old licences were not be accepted as they could be altered)

Naturally a SAE envelope is required

Useful for the bikers here, and those with a c1 entitlement perhaps.

I always hate the question of when did you pass your test :confused: according to the back of my license I did it all on the 30-05-74  I was 28 by then & I know I passed my car & motorbike test while I was in the TA & I finished with them by 1965. If the DVLA don't know when I passed my test (I sent the papers to them) how am I supposed to know
