Bought a netbook (Acer One Aspire dual core) just before we went away in Feb. Found it really good with a battery life of around 8 hours. Managed to get it a good price from John Lewis in Liverpool (managed to get them to do a price match for one I had seen in Comet) hoping to get a few quid off but the guy who checked picked a lower spec one which was about 20 quid less than I had expected :lol-053: could hardly get my card out fast enough. I like the Acer but disappointed with the Android OS as none of the apps except the pre-loaded ones will work.

Wife now decided she wants one instead of the old laptop, saw a nice slightly faster dual core netbook in Comet ASUS 1015PX-BLU015SS for £229.99 then found a discount code '10NETBOOK' to get 10% off (£206.99). I see that as well as windows 7 it has Express Gate (think it is a version of Linux).

Although these netbooks don't have the power of a full sized laptop they are quite adequate for browsing the web on the move.

we use ours with a gprs dongle, but mostly have found that a bit of forward thinking and downloading films/ programmes onto bbc iplayer provide the evening entertainment.
very handy and compact as well

We are now thinking of one, as well.

Check the windows version that comes pre-installed. Often it is Windows 7 starter - a very slimmed down version of the full thing. You may never notice the difference...then again you might.

I like Acer - my laptop is one. Also like the idea of dual boot with Linux. A personal choice, I think I will avoid Android or Chrome, whatever it is. I like the idea of being away from MS, but my large software collection is entirely windows.

I have windows 7 starter on my Acer netbook & it works just fine. I tend to use hibernate rather than shut down & it boots up quickly, I did find Android useful if I do shut it down as it boots up almost instantly, I can then download mail or browse the web with firefox but not much else.

Oh, I do use Chrome as my browser and Android on my phone. I was talking about Google's operating system for netbooks.

I am a fan of Google, but if I used their OS, I would lose a lot of very useful small programmes and some large ones. For my sins, I have Flight Simulator X...I can't see that working on Google's OS. :/

Strangely on my Acer netbook the browser that is installed with Android is Firefox, don't know if chrome would work? According to Acers website the version of Android installed on the netbook can't be updated & it says that other apps probably won't run? Not a good selling point.:rolleyes2:
