Hi
At the risk of starting yet another nc500 thread... We're attempting this in January. Has anyone who's been this way in winter encountered problems getting water or with toilets being closed? And if so any suggestions for the ones that are most likely to remain available would be much appreciated.

I just book into a campsite every 3/4 days for a night or two when up in God’s country in the winter.
Not many open in winter but there is a few and depending on your route check the uk campsite or C&CC websites to find ones that are open.
I tend to travel up the west coast and use the camping area in Shieldaig for water and the toilets down the hill to empty black waste.

Steve since when has Yorkshire been moved north of the border.
We will be reviewing your entry permit this week.

Thanks. I have had a look at the campsites...precious few open. We'll be going fairly slowly in shortish hops, as we always do, so there's a good stretch without very much but the odd toilet or tap...my concern was that like here in the Peak District many may get shut off/up in freezing weather. I thought the Shieldaig tap by the gate and any other external standpipes may be among these. Sounds like garages may be the best bet at such times...I hope they are amenable!

A thought aside, I hope when and if the powers that be in Scotland do something about facilities for motorhomes they take this aspect of their climate into account.

I’m heading up to Shieldaig in two weeks so will check the tap at the camping area and the toilets.
If not available I may head to Altandhu on the Coigach peninsula as the Port a Bhaigh campsite is open all year and I’ve stayed there in December.

Campsite at Durness is closed but allows use of facilities and Lochinver has facilities for motorhomes. As long as you empty and top up whenever you can I can't see any problems. The scenery will be stunning at that time of year.
