Having bought our van in January, a superb 2007 VW T5 Leisuredrive Conversion with only 34k on it we initially insured it for 8k per year. So far it has been used by our eldest son and his girlfriend in New Forest at Easter, by us round North and North West Scotland in May and our youngest son surfing in Biarritz last month it has already covered nearly 5k. Next month my eldest is taking it with his girlfriend to do the Switzerland circle so that's another 2500 at least! Me thinks before we get to use it again in mid September we'll have to up the mileage allowance, especially if we end up doing Loire Valley......................... we're insured with ABI who have been great so I'm sure it won't be much to up the mileage.
The van is a T28 84 5 speed with no a/c or power windows/mirrors so nothing extra that could go wrong! It felt a little sluggish on some hills when i fetched it so had it re-mapped to 115 hp with another 85 Nm extra torque which improved the fuel economy now averaging around 38 mpg and she happily cruises at 80 with no effort. The Leisuredrive conversion includes 3 way fridge, twin hob, oven and grill, pumped water, 240v heater (not found need even round 0 deg in Scotland with roof down), swivel single passenger seat, porta potti etc etc and came with a once only used Kyham driveaway awning which is quick and simple to fit. I recently bought the Fiamma cycle rack for it ready for sons trip to Switzerland.
I seem to keep finding little things to buy for it that help like levelling blocks and so on................................I had parking sensors fitted by an excellent Lithuanian guy for £85. He took 2 hours and was superb. Just gives you that extra little bit of security when reversing into those tight spaces.
To say we are pleased is an understatement as we wanted something we could basically go anywhere we could with my large Saab 9-5 estate. So far it has proved correct and is admired by all our friends with several wishing to borrow it.
Hopefully I've attached some pictures of it and also of a nice spot we found to 'Wild' at Oldshore near Sandwood Bay. Hope you like it
We've called it 'Colin' after seeing the wonderful note the chap left in Smoo Cave..
