Finally got round to buying a Tomtom, for years I've been using my PDA with different versions of Tomtom I managed to acquire  with maps for most places. Although it served me well the maps were well out of date, the price of the proper ones now are getting to reasonable. Went for a 930 Traffic as we didn't see the point of the 'Live' ones as you have to pay a subscription, & we got this one with the Europe & North Americam maps for less than the Europe version. I decided to download the latest maps (using the TT latest map guarantee LMG) thats when my problems started :(. At one point I got it so it wouldn't turn off then when I managed to get the thing off it wouldn't start up giving me all sorts of error messages. With help from the TT forums & the official TT support I've finally got it all working :D. One of the problems was the thing has 4 gb of internal memory but both the new maps add up to more than that  I did have a 8 gb memory card & have had to put one of the maps onto there  It seems stupid having something that won't fit the upgrade designed for it

Spent some time download POI's off the TT Home, seems to be quite a few Aires poi sets on there. I did notice some more unusual ones of the other POI's such as one for Dogging, others for Gay bars, Naturist beaches etc..

i have the 920,
never knew about the doging poi's :eek::D

Know what you mean Kontiki, I have a Garmin and tried to bring it up to date on the web and I get a message saying "not enough memery" so whats that all about. Its a great satnav but what do you do when this happens.

Have you used Tomtom Home, I think anybody with a Tomtom can download it & register. Then connect to their device, there is some free stuff such as the POI's you can download onto your device. Obviously they want you to buy the map updates, celebrity voices etc. but there is quite a big collection of POI's which other people have uploaded.

Its good isn't it, I like the mapshare feature where it updates itself when people report faults with the map. TBH in my opinion 'TomTom Home' is what brings TomTOM head and shoulders above the others :)

If you are having memory problems on your satnav then delete all "recent trips".

Every time you use it, a copy is kept. A sure sign that you need a clear out is when it takes longer to acquire the satellite.

On some older models you have to really search to find them (unless you are a geek:)). They do take up a lot of memory after a while. Do not keep too many `favourites` either, only keep the essential ones.

The memory problems I was having were on a brand new out of the box unit  I spent almost a week downloading maps & trying to install them. Then having to delete them again as it wouldn't update. The TT 930 has the North American & Europe maps on it with 4 gb of memory, leaving 200 mb free with them on. There ws about 30 mb of crap such as music & audio books I didn't want giving me 230 mb free (with me so far) the LMG download from Tomtom for both maps added up to just over 4 gb (also confirmed by the girl I spoke to at Tomtom support) so they don't fit. The solution was to install one of the maps to the SD card (I lucky I just happened to have a spare 8 gb SDHC card) this then leaves me with loads of space on the TT & on the SD card. I have read threads on the TT forums about the 730 - 750 as these only have 2 gb of memory & the new map is 2.07 gb

Although I have a Garmin I had a similar problem after my first free update i.e. lost all the free space I had.

With the unit plugged into the laptop I did an 'explore' and found I had gained DOZENS of languages and a dozen diffent vehicle icons, by deleating everything except English and all but two icons all my space came back!

If TT is the same it's worth a try!

Hi something you ma not be aware of
If you use windows explorer to delete things on a PDA it is in fact still on the PDA until you empty the Recycle Bin. If you delete it using the provided software such as TomTom home this does not happen.

To explain Windows does not actually delete the file it just makes it invisible, this is how it allows you to undelete it or bring it from the recycle bin. We get a lot of people with full phones at work, sending them back to us in IT because it looks empty but they can't copy things onto it, we send them back ask the user to connect the PDA to their laptop and then empty the recycle bin, they suddenly get all their empty space back, happens a lot with MP3 players as well :)

It's good but also updates the camera's every time someone logs it, then the bloody thing bleeps at every bridge on the motorway, drives you nuts:D
Tom Tom Home is good:cool: allows you to switch on and off certain items;)

Happy Camping:)

The problem I had with my Tomtom was there wasn't the space available on the device. Mine is the 930 & has 4 Gb internal memory, I have seen people with the 730 (Western Europe version) which has 2 Gb having similar problems in the new updated WE maps is greater than 2 Gb. I was able to install the new North America map onto a 8 Gb SD card leaving enough space for the WE map on the device.

The solution is to delete files for other languages etc. before installing the update. It seems stupid with the cost of memory being so cheap to have updates which won't fit on the device its intended. Then they stick demo music & video on it

I don't know why they can't something to do the job intended, I want a satnav not an entertainment system, likewise with a mobile phone why can't I get a phone  I don't want to take videos or pictures I have a camera for that, I don't want it to play music & I don't even want to go on the internet I much prefer a laptop.:mad:

Too true
When we buy things we look for 'features' thinking that we are getting more for our money in fact we end up with tools that are 'quite good' at lots of things when they could have been excellent at doing just 1 thing.

in tomtom home first thing update then back up my device then go to manage my device .remove all unused things that you dont use from deviceit will all then be on your computer if neded later
or try tomtom help and follow instructions or put the maps on an sd card

The first thing they recommend on all the Tomtom forums I visited was to backup everything using explorer first before you do anything, apparently Tomtom Home can cause problems. Then do the update, then if it's all working back it up again . I managed to end up with a unit where I couldn't get it working, TT tech support talked me through it to get it back to the original state. It was after my third attempt & third tech support call a nice lady went through it all to get the maps updated.

Since then put another program on TRIPMASTER where it can log your route as well as lots more things with a nice compass. I also downloaded TTMAPS where you can put your own maps on. I have Memory Map with all the OS UK maps down to the 25k ones & all the French equivalent IGN, but I think I might wait until we come back from Portugal before I mess with that  I can always use the OS maps for walking on my PDA with the pocket version of Memory Map linked to my bluetooth GPS :D
