My son and I are devastated,we went down to stay near Tenby last Friday and met up with friends at a campsite, the owner told us of a nice pub about 3 miles away so set off for a meal & drink, had a great meal and left to go back to site about 9.10 driving on same road back I saw water on road, thinking it was about 6 inches deep I went slowly forward, within seconds the water had risen to about 2 feet as it was a tidal estuary flood one of the worst in the country I found out later.
We had 6 " of water in the camper and the tide went out as quick as it came in.
We were recovered home and of course have lost lots of personal items as well as lots of the camper fittings ie water heater, propex heater etc.
I have managed to save the engine by changing the oil 3 times but the assessor has been today and declared it a write off !!! due to a health & safety issue !
It has been our pride & joy for 3 years and is in mint condition having covered 48k miles and we use it every weekend winter & summer.
I am obviously going to replace it but with what, as I am now waiting for the offer !!!

Still in a state of shock

Contact your insurance company and offer to buy the writeoff from them. You should be reimbursed for the full value of the van and you can buy it back dead cheap usually.

Sort it out and get it back on the road or use the bits in another van.

Hi thanks for your replies.
I was in this position in 1982 with my 1970 bay window vw,it was hit outside my house and written off,at the time I was a private detective with an office in a firm of solicitors and it took a lot of time and effort and their headed notepaper to pay me out and keep the vehicle.
I spoke to the assessor this morning with regard to being paid out and keeping it,he said it will be a cat b write off and will not be allowed to be put back on the road ! of course I am going to fight all the way but with the ingress of saltwater it will never be the same.
I have a policy of up to £2000 for personal things and £2000 for camper related things and it is amazing how it adds up !
Will wait for the offer and post back, just hope they are aware that a camper is special and not a car which to me is a bit of tin on rubber.

Salvage rights

We had a camper written off last summer applied to buy back the salvage rights but were told motorhomes were 40% of value for buy back making it totally uneconomical. Maybe not in your case but generally can see why when you look at the prices that fixtures and fittings fetch on fleabay we looked at a second hand blown air system one fetched £283, a cassette toilet £185 and so on.

r.i.p. Campervan hope you get sorted

salt water ingress ? . take the money and walk away, sea water is comparable to acid in the damage it does

ooouuuch

So sorry to hear you lost your van - I have a nearly 30yr old one but would be absolutely gutted to lose her, so it must be devastating to lose a nearly brand new one :(

Thanks to all for your kind messages, have been busy for the last couple of days dealing with the insurance co & assessors.

The terrible thing is that we have not been able to have a weeks break and trying to book holidays with my employers is a nightmare,my poor 11 year old has been helping me since the weekend but still thinks that it will be back on the road soon even after I have told him it wont.

I have had a dehumidifier in it since sunday and it has dried out well but now has an awful smell and of course the floor will delaminate.I have been told I will get an offer tomorrow ! it is a 1992 Talbot Autosleeper Harmony done 48k and is in superb condition, have seen the same model up for £9995 so will just have to wait and see what is offered.

Thanks to all

Wyn

So sorry to hear about your van, some people find it hard to comprehend the association that you build with your van, Maybe because you use it to a totally different way to any other vehicle. More a second home than transport.
Hope they make you a decent offer.
