Motorhomes in England

Just felt like having a moan. What is wrong with this country, can they not see how many motorhomes are about.People want to visit places in this country, but they make it hard ,with parking and no stopping over night. We are always ripped off in this country,no wonder so many go abroad when no cost to stop overnight.

Hi Gary
We live in a very selfish society massively promoted through the 'greed is good' 80s now nobody wants campervan owners (or anyone else) to have a share of 'their' area even for one night, greed brings jealousy and many people complain bitterly to the local council at having to share 'their scenery' with van owners without those van owners paying for the privilege, they cant see that encouraging motorhomes would result in income being brought into their communities and even if they could they still wouldn't be happy as the new income would not be going directly to themselves but to local shop/garage/cafe owners, or am I just being cynical?

Gary you are spot on with the situation in Britain.

I recon our only solution is the European Court of Equal Rights, which i understand and correct me if I am wrong, are passing laws, which will include, the UK to improve our ability to park-up

Councils in this country put up height barriers which allow cars to go through but discriminate against Motorhomes........How equal is that, I know that if we are told to move on from public land the local authority must get a Court order to enforce it ,now nobody wants that hassle least of all motorhomer's.

Everybody talks of 'rights' today but where is our rights to enjoy our country.

I will have to get off my podium or I'll fall off..........

Twosheds please don't hold your breath.
European regs are interpreted to suit.
European regs have existed for years that state that HGVs on international journeys with goods carried under CMR rules (thats all of them) must have free overnight parking facilities provided on the major routes through each member state. How many do you think the UK have provided on the motorway network? none. Equally most trucks parked overnight on trunk road lay-byes are parked illegally and depend on the police turning a blind eye.

If that's what the gov' do for an industry on which the country depends then what is it likely to do for what is basically a leisure industry?

We could do with some one like sainsburys, or similar company with parking areas, to allow one night stops say between7pm and10amfor motorhomes owners. How do the travellers and gypsies get away with it, any one no.

Funny you should say that Gary. I contacted all the major supermarket chains for information for my parking web site. You can see their responses (so far) Here.

Gary, thr problem in this country is that we all conform too easily & we do not complain loud enough.
For example, not enough people complain when dissatisfied in a restaurant or a garage for the sake of embarrassment!
We just say or mutter to our partner that we will not return.
We stick to rules too easily & will not speak out!
We are a nation of sheep!
The EU make the rules & only the British adhear!
I had better get off my soap box now!;)

well said, graham/kath. i typed this in whisper mode so as not to cause any trouble or ambarresment.

Information channel

Did any one see the caravan show on last night, no i am not swearing it shows motorhomes as well. There was a member from the motorhome club, saying about how it is free abroad and very good accomadation for motorhomes. That this country needed to get with it and sort the problem out.Mentioning its not just visitors ,but locals that want to go all year round ,but no facilities and sites shut.Reading above it sounds like we all should start complaining about are poor services we get in this country. The point of gypsies was mentioned , they just said about showing a club card no good to some people.

Carparking

Gary and Graham, why dont you get a job as carpark attendants, you seem to have a fettish for carparks when you should be WILD camping. Have you heard of the COUNTRYSIDE? Most roads lead to IT eventually...
Keep it Wild keep it Free!!!

I'm gonna stick my head up then duck ...quick.
I enjoy wild camping and free overnighting, so don't think I'm trying to be a spoilsport or goody goody, but don't we motorhomers sometimes get a bit carried away, presuming that because we are not a caravan, we can park anywhere we want to?

Whenever we wild camp, or freepark overnight, we count it as a bonus not a god given right.

Voxy (now ducking down again)

over night parking

It is not always possible to wild park, and nobody wants to pay if they dont have to. The only reason I mentioned about car parks , is in France they are used quite alot and are in some fantastic places .The french people see motorhomers as a way of bringing money to their towns , and using a car park which at night would other wise be empty, is a good way of bringing revenue and tourisim to the area. We seem to have agood mixture of motorhomes users, and it is good to talk and get veiws from all motorhome users.hope no one gets to wound up about some of the comments.

i suspect I'm like most people on this site. I use sites mostly because they are convenient, secure, you can leave the van all day get the deck chairs out and the bbq. People watching and use of a shower all come into it.

However, after a bit I get fed up with rules and people and want out, so I wild camp. Also, if I have big miles to do, i resent paying £10-15 for a site when all I do is pull on the handbrake and get 8 hours kip. In this situation I am not interested in CL's or CS's because I do not want to go miles out of my way and then have to pass pleasantries with the farmer.

Also if I go to the coast, I expect to stop by the sea, not a two mile drive away. Some of my best stops have been wild.

So, not a refusal to pay, but I consider the ability to wild camp in my own country as my birthright.

I personally don't think supermarkets are the answer, I believe we need to change legal limitations placed on the parking of Motorhomes anywhere in the UK and have the restrictions removed and if supermarkets allow parking that's a bonus.

Gary you are right how can the French do it and for that matter the Italians in providing facilities for longer that one day stays and in some cases providing free water and electricity.

As I've said in another thread, my web site is concerned with parking at all times of the day, not just overnighting.

I assume that even people who never use paid for sites need to park somewhere to do their shopping or for visiting places. If people want to take a chance of having to drive round a strange town searching for somewhere to park then that's fine. If, on the other hand, people want to make life a bit easier and find out the places where it is easy/difficult for MH parking then the information is there for them on the web site.

Yes most roads lead there but increasingly in built up Britain especially the south east there are all too few laybys to stop quietly overnight so one does have to resort to town carparks.
Personally I would overnight in a retail carpark -not at a 24 hour Tesco if it was allowed. BUT not camp. CAMP implies setting up a base for several days and then leaving to visit other places.
