As you might know i have a bigun...

Insurance on the motorhome 35 pounds a month, car 44 pounds a month.

With the credit crunch hitting home, im thinking of taking the car off the road and using the motorhome as my daily transport.

Might be for a few weeks to start, leave it on the drive, untaxed, theft only insurance, but if it works i might sell the car at a giveaway price.

My wife has a little Kia picanto, 1.0 engine, for them tight occasions.

Anybody else in the same position, or have done this in the past ?

i have a beddy cf compass drifter not quite as big as yours by the looks of it, and i use mine as daily transport only like using a luton van (but a lot more convenient). the only thing i must draw to your attention is insurance cover, some companies don't cover you for commuting to and from work check first with you insurance. other wise its a good idea only problem i find, is they are a little awkward for parking at times . and fuel consumption, but then again if you are running a large car (i used to have a renault safrane 2.5 litre auto 20 mpg driving nicely) then you more than likely wont see any difference . what you save on tax insurance mot costs and general maintainance more than offsets extra fuel costs.

used to have a car and camper, kept camper at work only space for 1 at home ,lost job so had to think which i wanted most so car went. having driven it for so long now dont think id go back to a car much prefer driving the van.camper is slow so never try to go fast and get 30 ish to the gallon around town 40 to 45 on a run but it never sees the other side of 50

Depends on the mileage you do privately and if you intend to keep the van for many years.

Unfortunately for me, I wouldn't be able to park my van (same size as an ambulance) at most of my work places. I have enough problems parking the car! The mileage that I do would also hit my insurance, but its the depreciation on the van that would suffer most because of my work mileage.

People buying m/homes in general look for low milage rather than considering that the engine is better for being used regularly and is good for 250k miles.

I would love to do what Rik does, have a siesta in it each day!

Dont know if its an option but how about getting a litte scooter. Use that when you cant use your van and when you go away you can put it on the back? Different option to consider

motorhome

I use my motorhome most days ,either for work picking children up and fishing at weekends.Dont have any problems ,think it is good to keep it running.Wife and other children use there own cars.Just hassle swapping around on drive depending who in last and who wants out first.

good idea as my van fits all single parking places i only have a problem with multistory car parks but i suppose if you have a longer van problems do occur with parking

As my wife does not drive I sold my car a couple of years back and we have since had the van (6 Mtrs) as our only means of transportation.
Fortunately we have a very good public transport system in West Yorkshire so we use the bus or train a lot but take the van for weekly shopping etc.
OK at times parking can be tricky but we feel that this is worth putting up with because for the cost of running the car we can have up to a month away in the van

Thanks for replies.
Should have given more information !
Plenty of space in work, hospital carpark. Work 3 miles from home, each way, 6 miles a day ! Keep on drive at home, and can use my misses car, when she in

I did this .... Bought the scooter £1,400 and it blew 2 tyres ... a fuel pump 2 exhaust pipes.... servicing same as cars..... and after 4 years it was stolen and trashed. I got £500 on the insurance...... i did some sums and it worked out that it had cost me £15 a week to use the scooter to get to work..... I rang the insurance and asked what the penalty was for using the van for commuting and all it was, was a £15 admin charge to change the cover.
I now use the van for work and it costs £12 a week:eek::D;)

i think using the van for everyday use is a decent idea especial at this moment in time as it helps keep the outgoings down ,that is if it is practical to do so .

Update, phoned motorhome insurer, and to have commuting added onto policy it's only 16 pounds a YEAR extra ! Bargain

Managed to cut my car insurance from 45 a month to 30 pounds a month. Still too expensive.

Other work colleques have offered me a lift everyday. Walk to nearest main road , which is 5 minutes away. Will give them 2 pouds a day. 10 pounds a week, and use motorhome whenever i need too :D

Just bought an electric bike and a bike rack for the van ...... so now I can make me choice every morning :):);)
