It already exists. Tax your vehicle for 12 months as normal and then when you take it off road, SORN it (this can be done on line). When you are ready to go again in the spring, retax the vehicle for 12 months and so on. We usually spend our winters in the Med and so rarely take our vehicle off the road but we did do it a couple of years ago - for 4 months - and will be doing it again this winter (from 1st December to end of March). Thus we will get a refund of a third on our 12 month road tax.

John just to clarify, a vehicle abroad for a few months still needs to be taxed ....I.E comply with home regualtions.

Sorn on a vehicle that i sSpain for the winte ris not allowed albeit I know a few that sorn and risk the gauntlet .

I have been in France since March 2010 not turned a wheel on British soil but still had to tax the van I think it i swrong but the current rules dictate
And believe me it aggrieves me

Would a camper have to be taxed if it was on a campsite though for the duration of the SORN? When we were in Spain last winter there were quite a few vans that were parked up for about 4 months, some of these were large RV's that looked like they weren't moving. Many had cars/motorbikes etc for transport.

Having had a conversation with DVLA , my understanding is that Sorn only applies in The UK ............if the vehicle is elsewhere it needs to be taxed.

dvla dont know that where you stored the vechile ok it off road stored in spain to avoid british winter then just tax it online just make sure that mot is still valid for the time you want to retax

Absolutely correct - maybe I should have made that clearer. We only SORN our motorhome when we store the van in the UK for the winter and jet off to Egypt or somewhere similar to stay in hotels that are very much cheaper than English or Spanish campsites!
