mosquito nets

last year while we were in italy we were eaten alive, all the lotions and potions didnt do a thing.
i was thinking of putting mosquito nets in for our trip this year and wonder if you have them how have you fitted them?
me and the mrs sleep in the pod with our daughter in the top back bunk, cheers tommy

if you get a net designed for a double bed,its usually designed to hang from a central overhead hook and then tuck in round the bed,you could do the same thing in a van but would need some loops sewing on the sides and a couple of hooks putting up to keep the net off you.worth a bit of effort not to wake up with one eyelid swollen shut and a stupid looking fat lip

We don't have nets but do frequently have the need to use the window and door mosquito screens. Sometimes for mosies and for flies.
Under these conditions we enter or leave the van as quick as we can leaving the door open for as shorter period as possible.

we tried that and then spent ages chasing the one that got in down but finding in the morning we have all been eaten, i dont know if the netting on our windows has hole that are too big allowing them in, thats the reason im thinking nets, i dont want to screw or drill into the roof and wondered how others had done it.

And if you're out of the van for the day/evening give it a good spray just as you leave. That gets all the ones which have got past the net defenses and hidden themselves inside the van. Some of the noseeums (midges) can get through normal mosquito net so get as finer weave as you can.

Good advise about the spray as nets are as good at trapping them in as they are out.

The window mesh is not called 'fly screen' for nothing.

It is useless for midges.

A mosquito net must be well clear of you as they cannot get through it but can suck your blood through it.

They are more active at dawn and dusk and are attracted by certain deodorants. Keep covered up at peak times. The tip about the fan is a good one, that is what I used in Angola and Guinea to keep them at bay. An oscillating one will protect 2 people better. Avon Skin so Soft only had a limited protection for me (the lady midges must think I am Brad Pitt) but is about the best product as none of them are 100% mozzie proof.

you're right about the eucalyptus,we lived under one in a van and hardly saw any.another thing we used to do in france was buy the anti mozzy tablets for the plug in machines, make a few holes in a baked bean tin,put a tablet on top and a nightlight candle in side, worked all night

The baked bean or similar tin is a good idea. Any way to get the tablets warm should work!
We have a plug in machine (mozzy burner) but as hardly ever on hook up, we very rarely use it.

thanks every 1 some great tips there. we dont really have any problems with the midgies its just the mossies they start on me once we get past austria, italy i get nailed and once bit i have a reaction to them and the bites swell up to a 50p size blister:eek:

i think i might try putting a net up on the roof with velcro
