;Hi another new double/trouble! Hopefully we're off to morocco this winter along with many others. However, first time with camper. Any advice on w. c. ovr there & how secure if at all would the van b if we left it unnattended - but with others?ok, a tall order but does anyone have experience with the local "minders" for a few dirhams or so???:):):):D

It depends where you are: I assume that you will going from Algerciras to Cueta or Tangier? My advice would be that once you clear the Port - keep going
If you have a female in your party make sure that she covers up ie long sleeved blouse done up, long ankle length skirt or loose trousers and a head scarf.
If you head off down the Coast you will find lots of places to stop and you'll be safe.
An area that I would advise against is Chefchaouen. It is the centre of Hashish growing area and can be pretty unpleasant; that's to say, down right life threatening. My pal Bron and his mate were shot at when they went for a walk... Its up to you
Others say differently
The surfing is fantastic but take a full wetsuit because the sea does get cold.

Thanx guerdeval, thats really helpfull. Have you visited personally & should I cover up All the time????? I usually wear as little as possible cos these months are hols!

Thanx Baloo thats really helpful.Should I cover up ALLthe time _help!!Yeah we will do one of the crossings from Algerciras, have you travelled personaly?

We were there with Desert Detours this spring. As a female I wouldn't go for shorts or miniskirts or a skimpy top showing your shoulders and stomach although obviously at the beach it's different. There's no need for long sleeves and a headscarf. Loose trousers and T-shirts were the order of the day. Plenty of women in the group wore scoop necklines and no-one got hassled about their clothing. Longer shorts would be OK on the campsites I think.
If you want more reassurance/advice look at the Lonely Planet website - Thorntree on the Africa/Morocco branch. Clothing is a very frequently posted topic/question and the advice generally is to dress modestly but there's no need to overdo it. Moroccan women cover themselves but don't usually envelop themselves in burkha type clothing - some, especially the younger ones, dress very smartly often in western-style clothes ie trousers and a long-style blouse or tunic.
We went to a hammam in Marrakesh. It's quite strange to go from the covered women in the market outside to having young women in their knickers sluicing you down inside the bathouse!
Enjoy your trip!

"Silverbike" has given you the best advice on clothing. Lonely Planet is good but I haven't looked at the Rough Guide sites for ages.
Lonely Planet seems to be aimed at the student market and Rough Guides more the Telegraph / Grundian reader these days.
Virtual Tourist can be very good.

The surfing websites can also be useful: Just be careful when you stay and there are a lot of surfers about, some of them are thieving little scrotes

have you travelled personally?
Yes, both with Beloved son and daughter hence my comments on covering up :D

Thanx a lot Silverman, its really useful 2 have a female's point of view who's actually been there! Weve only been over on foot ferry so far but looking forward 2 an extended trip.
I found Tangier a bit freaky when we were there but we did the Kasbah & all the tourist bits & collected some hangers on. Definitely want to drop the tourist trails this time.Lonely Planets always with us on our forays abroad too.Thanx again

Thanx 4 your advice & interest - this is a fantastic website, I just stumbled on it while looking at camping in general, the welcome & interest in new members is just unbeleivable. Will try to follow the example

it is a good website and the advice you will get from it is generally sensible and well considered
Just don't follow my advice about bars...

I have been trying to book ferries from Algerciras to Tangiers and Ceuta on the website and also from Tarifa to Tangiers. It comes up as "no sailings" at whatever dates I choose. Can someone let me know how to go about it as we want to sail end of November and return early March.

Yes, on-line booking sucks and I don't know why they bother to run the web sites.

We are taking apparently good advice from old hands and waiting 'til we can see the ferry terminal before looking for tickets.

I agree Tony Lee, it sucks. Looks like I will follow your advice and head out to Spain to book our tickets. I did read somewhere, we could be done by buying from the wrong people and could be invalid, costing us more. Is this true???

Sounds like the usual scam is to sell tickets at the 'Local residents" price and apparently they are cracking down on those (unwittingly?) making false declarations to get them.

getting to morocco

hi
if you are going to sail from algerciras come off n340 at exit 112 and park up
on lidls car park there will be lots of motorhomes at that time of year all going
too morocco.buy your tickets from VOYAGE NORMANDIE which is other side of
the road opposit carrefour supermarket, they do the cheapist deals.if you like
a drink buy your booze from lidl and take it with you, expensive in the supermarkets in morocco.dont forget you need a green card to drive your
motorhome in morocco, but you can buy insurance when you arrive there.
the motorways south are very good and cheap, have a good trip and enjoy
morocco
tony

Hi...have a great time in Morocco, its just fantastic, although I did get quite upset by the genuine poverty there.
Be sensible about clothes, if you have in your mind that tight clothing emphasises the naked body, so loose clothing is best. I also have blond hair which caused a bit of a stir, so the odd person did come up and want to touch it. Daisy

Hi Daisy, welcome aboard :D and enjoy yourself reading all about us  and wilding!   JIM

concerning parking the vehicle in morocco. We've (a family of 4, in a landrover) travelled all over this beautiful country a few times with no problems.
Almost everywhere you go to park, you will see a couple of men (guardians, no uniform and can look scruffy) patrolling the street, they will probably find you before you see them. Confirm that they are the "guardians de voiture", and then after handing over a few Dhirhams, they will look after your vehicle for an agreed time. We've always found them really good and once had them looking after a fully laden landrover for 3 days outside our hotel in Marrakesh, with no problems. We just nipped out every now and then and gave them a drink / cakes / more money etc.
hope this helps.
ps unless in a hotel, don't use toilets, some can be the worst experience you'll ever encounter, we're still talking about some we've had to use.
