We are going to Morocco in spring 2015. There are lots of travel stories and advice on this site, plus blogs etc., so we will be having a good read of these.

Our campervan insurance is due for renewal in November and we know that a lot of policies don't cover Morocco. Advice from those who have traveled to Morocco on how they have managed their insurance would be appreciated. Also advice on breakdown cover.

thank you

safeguard, saga . comfort, coop, nfu. all will cover morocco. there possibly are others .
some did cover it for break down etc . but always carry a good tow rope ,wire rope . or tow pole . ideally two spares some push in tyre strings off e bay and a good means of pumping them up. a few spares just as normal . good jack and several nice strong bit of wood for axle stands etc .
make sure you can change your own wheels and tyres . complete . .. carry good wheel brace tools .
every village as a mechanic that will fix almost anything .

I'm with Safeguard who gave me a 90 day cover note for Morocco at no extra charge. That's insurance cover, not breakdown. vwallen has far more experience than me of touring North Africa but we spent 5 weeks there and the roads weren't too bad. Never needed towing out or breakdown recovery. Ok, some of the roads were a bit dodgy :) but we managed ok. Roads no worse than Eastern Europe but if you are thinking about going off road then you'll probably need all the kit recommended by vwallen, stick to the main or minor roads and you'll be ok and have a great time.

the main roads are ok . just keep your eyes open for pot holes . but do venture off the main roads . drive slower . many are single track roads and both meeting traffic have to pull over to the scrub to pass . punctures can be a problem . mind you may not get any.
we do drive in the sand etc . go places many might not . i say carry what i mentioned as minimum gear. tools etc is if you can use them . its amazing where you can get caught out . bit of blown sand by a beach or in the desert . a mate can get you out easily . have had mates drive into puddles in portugal and sank to the axles . one was by the fish market in quarteria . that was funny . took a big 4x4 truck to get him out . luckily a mate was driving one . 5 mins out he came . but it could have been any of the campers around us .
drive slowly and have fun .
the worse is in the real desert , thorns grow just under the surface of the sand . you never find them in the tyre but can get you often . have had 11 punctures in a day on my old vw t2. Car Bike Bicycle Motorcycle Tubeless Tire Tyre Puncture Plug Repair Kit Tool New | eBay
these sort of kits are great . so long as you can pump the tyre up. buy some spare strings as well. or plugs if you call them that. they charge about a quid to supply and fit them in morocco.

I posted this in the Insurance forum but as it answered my original questions I thought I would put it here. The best deal I could find was with Comfort at £360.78, including UK-Euro breakdown. Europe 365 days, max 180 days in one country. Morocco £17.50 for Green Card 120 days, breakdown included with Green Card. Total £378.28 Insurer is Aviva and breakdown cover is with RAC

AIB could provide the same cover but was more expensive at £375.78, including UK-Euro breakdown. Europe 365 days. Morocco £37.50 for Green Card 120 days, breakdown included. Total £413.28. As was Safeguard at £502.90 (-£50 cash back M&S voucher after 90 days), including UK-Euro breakdown. Europe 365 days. Morocco free Green Card, no breakdown cover. Total £452.90

Adrian Flux (current broker) could not provide cover for Morocco but if Morocco not needed they would have been the best price at £229.53 + UK-Euro breakdown £87 = £316.53. Europe 60 days per trip, unlimited trips.

All conditions broadly similar; £200 excess, 7,000 miles, Legal Protection, etc.

Take care not to do anything to upset the locals, be aware they have some different laws over there !

BBC News - Campaign to free gay Briton Ray Cole from Morocco jail

After reading the link, sorry to say only himself to blame, when the govenment says it is a crime in Morocco, should always check the laws for country you are visiting.
And what rubbish in telling people not to go, as long as you abide by thier laws and you are fine, people are very fiendly in the ruarul communitys, not sure about citys have not stayed long, just go in to fill up fual and food.

We had ADAC Plus breakdown cover. When the ignition keys lost their coding because of an arcing battery connection, they send a truck 150km to puck us up and took us 150km to the nearest Ford dealer. Very helpful and professional.

ADAC don't cover UK people anymore you have to go through the AA and the AA don't cover Morocco. When we went last year/this year my mate Al got ADAC cover, I called three days later and they said they would cover me but the payment didn't leave my bank. I called them after we had crossed into North Africa and they told me that they could now not cover me and Al's was the last policy they could honour. That was December last year. For insurance, go through the ferry port at Tangier Med, white building on the left just before the exit gate pull in. One month insurance is about 90 Euro three months was about 250 euro It basically isn't worth the paper it is written on but it does keep the cops off your back at checkpoints.

I hope this helps,

Jed

I renewed my insurance today. The best price I could find for cover including Morocco was with AXA; £170 cheaper than my renewal quote from Markerstudy. We're off to Morocco next March.

Ceuta - surfers beware..

We crossed at Ceuta, and were shown by a local to the insurance office at the border crossing. Organised chaos - but seems to be standard practice.
I think it was just legal minimum cover though - which isn't what you need.
Had an interesting experience parking overnight in the town carpark - someone slackened the rear wheelnuts on our van in the night.
I'd heard a couple of bumps but was too sleepy to care. Driving off in the morning, the back wheels started to flap immediately. Also got some hostile gesticulation from a driver indicating we weren't welcome; this was either because we were British and close to Gib, or more likely because we had a surfboard on the roof.

Had breakdown cover with ADAC for several years.
Called them out twice in mainland Europe and the service was excellent. As well as mainland Europe it covers all countries with a mediterranean coast.
