More moaning from Barra....

Quite cross about the comment re parking in lay-byes - "the police have the power to move them on or charge with obstruction"

Erm, no - I have paid my road tax, if I want to use a lay-bye, I will (not necessarily for overnighting but the original post was about people daring to stop in daytime too).

A lay-by is for vehicles stopping for a rest break or take in the view and not for using as a carpark. As for the “I pay my road tax” comment. It’s the minority the spoils it for the majority.

So if you stop to sleep overnight is that not a rest break? Would be an awful lot if truckers in bother if it isn’t.

It’s all about common sense. Lots of places to park up in the Highlands without clogging up lay-bys and giving campervans bad press.

I'm sorry but I do feel that if I want to take a rest break or take in the view, I am equally entitled as the next person to do that, whatever vehicle I am using - I'm not talking about causing an obstruction, overnighting or staying for hours and hours. And my interpretation of the Facebook comment was that that poster didn't mean that either. I read that he objected to motorhome simply using lay-byes at all, and that, IMO, is wrong.

Obviously your equally entitled to use a lay-by but not for parking all day and overnight. As I said use your common sense and have consideration.

Glad we did the Hebs 2013, we did say we would return, but sounds more bother than the Hebs are worth, especially if travelling in a MH.

I bet the moaners are not native Hebrideans?
I imagine the natives, especially the older generations, remember well how difficult it was for an island economy to survive before the tourists started to arrive. Young adults packing up and moving to the mainland because there was no money in fishing and crofting, leaving rural villages to dwindle and die.

As I said yesterday, it may be a hard lesson that they need to learn, don't bite the hand that feeds.

Middle class English Immigrants chucking their weight about ,,,Whatever next ?

I have no experience of Barra, but do have experience of around Lochcarron and the English influence almost feudal in their attitude a proper set of NIMBYs wiht no regard to local culture /tradition .Of course the circle ey move in a mate sees it and buys adjacent estates etc I have seen it happen.

FOr the record I am English but distance myself from this set of champagne charlies as I am sure most of my fellow country men do

They should be glad of the company come October they all say baa baa and talk to the sheep place is a desert for six months talk about cutting you’re own throte put some facilities in then you’ll have some return business no brainer.🤔

On Tiree is there is about a dozen Croft sites and one campsite. Wildcamping in a vehicle is not permitted and you need to book sites in advance or Calmac won’t let you and your camper on the ferry. Lots of info online.

no overnight parking sign Carsethorn

I have just been told about the same thing at the Car Park in Carsethorn Dumfries with a new sign No Overnight Parking

I have a small fiat van and go Wild Camping to various sites through Scotland so found it sad that Dumfries and Galloway thought it alright to supply and site this sign.

There is no good reason as most vans come for the view over the Solway to see the birds and porpoise and travel on the next day leaving there space clean and tidy.

D&G Council complain about being hard up so why would they do this.

It is not illegal so come and enjoy the Village and use the good pub Steamboat Inn and be happy

Maybe its because the car park is so small - although residents seem to use it overnight.
However, there are so many superb spots within a few miles - for bird watching, you cannot beat the ex-cl at caerlaverock corner which is very welcoming, and asks only for donations .(Likewise at the rear of the cafe in Glencaple).

We like to think we are welcoming in D&G unlike some hebridean islands!!

Dave.

I’ve always found D & G to be very welcoming, a beautiful and relatively quiet area.

This has got nothing to do with parking and everything to do with an attitude by some, that every visitor to Barra has to put funds into their coffers.
It's strange that they are not complaining about the amount of cars on the island now, I wonder where they park for the night.
Are cars ok to remain in the one place for more than a few hours without being badgered.
I reckon being (advised) to go to a camp site is regrettable, and the punitive action taken for not following the (advice) scandalous.

The solution is simple control the amount of motorhomes on the island to a reasonable amount that wont upset the infiltrators from down south
who obviously have a bee in their bonnet.

I was on the Island about 30 years ago, and I found the locals exceptionally friendly and very welcoming, even though I was camping.
I find it hard to believe that the same folk I knew are behaving like this.

Or possibly we should remove the RTE scheme from Barra, if they are not happy. Somehow I don't think those same people would be happy about that either.

What's happened to Dorcas here and on his Barra thread?
Has he been sent to the naughty corner?
