I've just discovered this and it looks useful for anyone thinking of changing mobile networks or getting a new mobile internet / phone SIM Sitefinder Mobile Phone Base Station Database

Phil - is there a "Useful Links" or "External Resources " Section for Wild camping subforum? I found one for Motorhoming subforum but not for WC.

If you need a mast locator just take me with you :)

Parked up on a campsite the other week, switched on the 3g on my Blackberry and then bridged the phone to my Blackberry tablet and sat browsing, fascinated at the strength of the signal. I called a friend over and remarked on this, most impressed at the browsing speed of the tablet, as it was using the phone's signal and data.

My friend, trying to keep a straight face just pointed towards the front of my van. There, not 50yrs away was the biggest phone mast in creation, and i had parked in front of it without even noticing it :) :)

Nice find! Looks interesting but a little cryptic as it doesn't give the range of coverage (that I could find)

I did a search for Settle N Yorks, and found an Orange mast of 15m and a 3 mobile of 16.75m high both of similar power. In Helwith Bridge, I could get an Orange signal but not a 3 Mobile one, even going up onto the rocks above the quarry. There's a Voda mast in Horton, but I didn't have equipment to pick that one up.

Does anyone else have experiences with signals to check out the maps :) ?

:ditto: I just did the same both for Helwith and RH. I had a good fast signal (phone and mobile internet) at Helwith on Vodafone. I didn't try my 3 dongle.

The map tallies with my experience of Vodafone and O2 at home, and with local areas of single provider only coverage, similar to Yorks Dales, so I think it's pretty accurate but as you say, it would be useful to have details of the signal range although in hilly areas, any area of high ground between you and the mast will block it.

:yeahthat:

Good point. The masts in Settle are in different parts of the town so as you go up the valley, the hills on either side could block line of sight from one or the other out, depending...
