Preparing my van for the near future,I sent back my Huawei 5577 and the poynting puck 1 then I bought a Huawei E5785 modem and a Poynting puck 2 aerial. However on doing a series of speed check the aerial was sometimes half the down loading speed but twice the uploading speed of the bare modem inside the van, I cannot understand this as it should be better . I reconnected the aerials to the connectors and it was a bit better but I am sorely disappointed that it was not better than just the modem by itself, I spoke to Poynting, and they said it gets a better signal but the speed depends on the mast?????? It just seems odd to be better without an aerial outside.
I Have not checked the Ipad by itself with the sim card in it direct but in the past found that it was unable to get a signal that was adequate in some places, (New Forest) I have looked on line to find some details of the modem to find if there needs an IP change but no mentions anywhere, All I got with the box was a quickstart strip of paper, no details or real manual. I would have thought that sitting in a double skinned aluminum box would have made the outside aerial vital, but it seems I have wasted £200. As we a not going anywhere again maybe it is not necessary anyway but the signal inside my house with 18inch walls is abysmal but I wish to dump the virgin TV package at £56 and go with the EE 100gb per month sim.
I do need to find WHERE the EE mast actually is to be able to face the correct wall of the house, but I never seen any masts at all around here, the EE maps show one where one is but there is nothing at all, unless it is hidden up inside somewhere.

Three also told me data speeds weren't dependant on signal strength. I did buy a aerial which increased my signal strength but did nothing to increase my data speeds. Have you tried other mobile providers as changing to another mobile provider helped me I tried data from EE. O2 & Vodafone on borrowed sims one was a large increase in speed at my location of course that maybe different when out an about in the van

Send the antenna back and then speak to Adam at https://www.motorhomewifi.com/

He will give you expert advice. I bought a Poynting antenna which did not work, Adam asked for my address and then sent me a map showing my local masts. It proved that no antenna would give me a top notch signal due to being in a dead spot for reception. If you were ever a member of Motorhomefacts you might remember that he was very helpful before he set up his own company. I strongly recommend him.

The way to go is 5G if you’re a speed freak, very fast downloads but slower uploads

I stuck it to roof.

I read these points with interest. Knowing very little about this area I do ponder that I purchased a Satnav some 4 years back that picks up TV/radio and so far in Uk have never failed to get a channel with just a small strip aerial stuck inside the windscreen. Is it different technology, wave frequencies etc. I wonder this because I quite often have trouble with my mobile signal yet can get TV/radio on the SatNav

I use an antenna to give me a better chance in areas with very poor signal. I know data rate and signal strength may not be too closely tied together but no signal has equated to no data in every instance for me. I use a combination of my old 5577 connected to a flat panel aerial off eBay and my 511 connected to a puck antenna. If one isn’t working the other almost invariably is. Saying that Kielder forest and bits of Scotland can be a no go data area

Download slower than upload speed is often a symptom of a congested cell. It is the default situation for our local EE mast - too many users.

I don't know if you can do it with the E5785, but with the 5577 you can change the connection settings in the menu to force a 3G only connection. In congested areas this can often result in a faster and more stable download speed than the congested 4G signal.

It was stuck on before I tried using itso there is no way it can go back.

I am not talking about your motorhome. You have an antenna fitted for when you are away in the van ... so that is sorted.

You said you need to sort out your home broadband also. Are you expecting the one antenna on the motorhome to serve your home as well? If so you need a rethink and get the appropriate directional antenna for your house.

I was hoping to use the same mifi at home and in the van. I now have no phone signal at all in the house and only my virgin fibre. The aerial was for the van but as it is staying at home for a very long time I want a signal to sit in it and be secluded. The house router will not connect through the thick solid walls.
I cannot go to EE now as they are shut in Town, so only contact is on the phone. I cannot get sense from the signal one moment it was 11mbs then walk a few yards and it dropped to 0 and all shut down?????? No idea where the cell aerials are near here.

There is a very good app called “Find Tower” that you put in your postcode and it scans and gives you all the masts near you and which providers, Three, EE or Vodafone for example

I tried putting the MIFI unit in a tupperware box on the roof, its something you could try for zero cost ? Or putting it against a glass window ?

Earlier this year we were out of communication completely for 2 months as our cables had been taken down by a tractor load! No landline, no broadband and no mobile phones as we have no reception at home so rely on wifi calling.
In desperation I bought the mifi in from the van and surprisingly the Huawei modem itself gave me 2 bars of signal (remember none at all on our phones) and with an external Poynting antenna connected it gave me 4 bars. This didn’t have any impact on speed however, getting downloads of 10 to 15mbps both with and without the antenna. However it was a life saver for us as it meant we were back in touch with the outside world again.
So conclusion for where we live is that mifi router alone grabs better signal than phone and an external antenna grabs even better signal but no impact on speed.

Ring them up and tell them you can get a better deal elsewhere. Got ours reduced to £24 and its Superfast Cable.

Probably have already tried it, but when we first got our mifi it didn't connect to Dave's tablet at all, but connected to mine. I ended up resetting the mifi (via the app) and choosing the network. Then had to reboot the tablet and it connected fine. In some places we stick it to the roof vent or ceiling , with velcro, to get a better signal. Have an aerial which we use one inside of van window if signal bad. Doesn't help your issue with the aerial ( or without)...sorry!

Brought mine in Now but normally our router in the van parked on the drive serves our house well for wifi

I can confirm that data speeds do indeed to be mast-dependent. At home, I have connected to two 3 transmitters on different masts (one of which I am unable to locate). The transmitter giving me the strongest signal when using an external aerial systematically gives lower speeds than the one giving a weaker signal, to which my router connects when using internal aerials or when the external aerial is pointed away from the strong signal.
