Mk 2 ducato Syncromesh

After the last couple of trips out its become aparent that there is a clunk developing when selecting 4th gear.:(

Basicly I've phoned around in Nottingham and a recon (all syncromech and bearings changed) seems to be around £850 (including remove and refit) with a new clutch.

Apparently it's not an uncommon problem with the mk2 box, so I wondered if any members had

a) changed gearbox oil and solved the problem?? (would be nice!!)

b) Paid less and got a good job.

i'm in Notts, but will travel within reason, van drives fine if I double declutch.

All advice welcome,
Cheers
Nick:)

I take it then that you have tried these people, reccomended by another MH'er

Nottingham Clutch and Gearbox, Moorbridge Court, Unit 11, Hucknall Lane, Nottingham. NG6 8AJ. 0115 979 4040.
Regards,
Chris.

Thanks Chris

I did call, they seemed unconvinsed about the idead of changing the oil.

V. nice people but quoted upwards of £1400 for the job.

The last thing I want is to pay peanuts and get monkeys, but 2 other local quotes are around £800 -850.

Always struggle with this sort of choice, once when I neeeded a cylinder head job done on a car, I decided to go to the dearest guy as they appeared to be worry free. wrong choice!! :( ended up having job done twice and never really worked again.

So it seems like pot luck!

Hi Nick,
Do you keep the oil level topped up to around 25mm from the top of the dip stick? It is recomended on the TE forum on Preloved to help stop the 5th gear running on the dry side and wearing it might help.
Regards,
Chris
