Milenco mirror protectors stolen!

I posted about this on a FB group about a week ago and one reply thanked me for highlighting it so I thought I would mention it here too. I'm currently keeping my van on the driveway of my mothers house but I live elsewhere. About 3 weeks ago I fitted a set of the black Milenco short arm mirror protectors to my van. On returning to my van a couple of weeks later I found that some tight fisted lowlife scumbag had spotted the covers, walked up the driveway, uncrewed the covers and stole them. It never occured to me, although it should in this world now, that they would be stolen when I fitted them. The only thing I can think of if I replace them is to countersink the screw heads so they can't be unscrewed. I probably won't bother replacing them though, they're expensive for what they are at around £70, but to nick them, seriously!?!? Has anyone else experienced this? Nobody on the FB group has said it has happened to them. At the time it put me on a real downer for a few days, not for the cost but for sad and disheartening fact it happened at all.

I think it is very unusual! Let's hope not a future trend!

One word of caution ... a by-product of theft protection siuch as fixing the screws so that cannot be removed or various other things is that the type of people who steal things will usually think nothing of causing damage to obtain the object of their desire.
For example, unscrewing the bracket was a simple way to nick it. maybe another way could be to lever the cover off on the outer side, maybe causing damage to the mirror itself?

No suggesting making life easier for the scrotes, but need to be a touch pragmatic and not cause yourself more hassle and possible expense in the process.

Yeah my thoughts too so I probably won't bother replacing them.

I didn't know these mirror covers existed. I've also just payed £300 for a new o/s mirror assembly.
£70 for the covers sounds like they might be a wise investment.. if they work. Anyone had their mirror bumped with them fitted yet?

Yes, that's why I got them. Hadn't planned on replacing them every two weeks though, lol....

I imagine there could be a pile of N/S covers going spare if people keep bashing the O/S. Could be good news for people like me with a LHD ;)

I used to get my transit vans hub caps nicked on a regular basis. I got a set and glued some razor blades right were they’d put there grubby fingers to rip them off .Got up one morning with a trail of blood but missing one hub cap that I found in a hedge down the street. I got a wee bit of satisfaction from my evil deed.

It reminded me of the days of hub cap thefts too. Nowadays you'd get prosecuted for injurring and upsetting the thief probably!

Yes, and it did help. Another tip is to carry spare mirrors - just the glass. They aren't expensive to buy, and having spares saves a lot of stress.

Yes, they work. I clattered my nearside mirror last year on a branch and it saved the mirror.

Had my EHU cable pinched a couple of years ago. Replaced it with black cable hidden in hedge etc and to date not pinched.

Always had protectors on long arm mirrors [none ever stolen] . Never bothered with short arm ones . Somebody hit short arm one recently . Managed to get a cheap replacement [£70+?] . Bit of a footer with electrics. aerial etc

Also handy for making a damaged mirror look better :)

The trick of course is to keep out of the bushes  As for fastening them on. Many years ago one of the local business guys got fed up with someone nicking his radio. So he duly fitted a smart new radio and installed some barbed wire up the back of the dash to stop them getting the radio out. Couple of days later they found the culprit with his hand firmly wedged up the back of the radio. The Fire Brigade were all for cutting the dash out but he refused saying the guy had got his hand up the back it was upto him to get it out again. He then insisted the Police charge the guy even though he had not managed to steal the radio.

All sounds good, I've just ordered a pair... Strangely, bolting the stable door after the horse has gone, springs to mind

Well, at least your misfortune has helped others who didn't know about these covers!. Horrible to be disillusioned by some of the nasty scumbags around and it doesn't help to say it could have been worse! Have learned to be pragmatic about these things once the initial reaction subsides.

Well it sounds like I've just been unlucky then. I'm glad you've discovered the covers Blue Yonder and thanks for your kind comment Ruth, I have moved on now, lifes too short etc.....
