Yesterday we went to Inverewe Gardens (National Trust for Scotland near Poolewe C&CC site - although we weren't staying there!) and in the summer it must be the midgiest place in Scotland, however yesterday there was not a midge in sight. BLISS. It was warm, sunny and for once we did not spend the whole day scratching:p

Hi Magbrin,

That's nice to know, we're up that way next week. I was Google Street Viewing Poolewe earlier this afternoon. :)

Cheers,
Dave.

what you need is a repellent, thanks i married one, lol.

had to get that one in

now the serious stuff read about this on several forums last year coz i always get attacked by the little blighters, a product by avon called skin so soft with blue label, ( replenishing dry oil body spray ) apparently our boys in the sas use the same stuff. worked for me to.

You're right -we sell it in our shop, although I have to say thay we don't get too many midges here as we nearly always have a breeze - or strong wind - which keeps them at bay:cool:

Inverewe

Beautiful place to visit.

Can't say we ever found it too bad for midges though tend to visit earlier or later in the year.

Torridon would get my vote in Scotland for midgeiness but worst I ever experience was at Keilder forest!! Only time we were driven off a site and to make it worse we were actually tenting

Agree with Keilder forrest being bad. Tis also the worst place ive experienced for midgies, even slightly further south near Alston is supprisingly very bad too.

I've covered much of scotland over the last 10 days and, so far, haven't seen any. Are they out yet? Roo - Now on Skye which won the toss over Poolewe.

The midgiest place I've ever been to is Glen Trool - haven't been back there for over 20 years and I shudder to think of it even now.
Avon Skin So Soft is like many repellants - it works for some people and not for others, I think it all depends on your own natural smell (not meant in a nasty way) whether something will work for you or not.

I well remember a day in Arisaig when I was chatting to a guy wearing just shorts and flip-flops. I was getting eaten alive and he didn't have a midge anywhere near him - apart from "mine" a couple of feet away :(

This is a no-brainer.
God (in his infinate wisdom ) created midges at the end of Loch Etive.
Had to rescue half a dozen young Japanese girls who were camped down there, a few years ago.
Got them into the (relatively) safety of the van & almost convinced
them that vigorous sex was the only way to combat the beasties.
Sadly, my concience took over, but they left , well rubbed in Avon Skin So Soft.
Ah ! Happy days.

Seems to me, they're moving south:D:D:D

Took the Scouts camping near Rothburry. Pitched tents on Saturday afternoon lovely place. Sunday morning the place was covered in a thick black cloud of midge.

We all dashed to the Mini bus and headed to Rothbury. Had breakfast in the cafe and after lunch broke camp and set up that night at Eastgate in Weardale.

Parents very confused when they got post cards from Stanhope.

The midges were particularly bad at Glebe Park, Bowness-on-Windermere yesterday

Confirmation indeed - they ARE moving South:D:D
(shhhhh, don't tell them the weather is warming up or they may come back)

It has been suggested that this may be a good year for midge avoidance, due to lots of them being killed off whilst buried in the ground during the unusually cold winter.

I agree with the nomination of Glen Trool as the midgiest place, a conclusion reached after many years of camping all over Scotland. They even sell "Glen trool Midge" badges there!

Spent 6 weeks on The Isle of Rhum in the late 70s .....never been back since coz of the midges:mad::mad:
