Midges

Hi Everyone

We are going for a 7/8 day tour round Scotland the 1st week in August.

So far I have got

Mosquito coils
Avon Skin so soft
Insect repellent spray
Insect repellent gel
Midge repellent spray (made in Scotland!)
Vitamin B1 tablets (to start taking 1 week before)
Citronella candles

Anything else worth trying??

We do not have any living space as we are not a MH or CV - we are just a van!!!
I have been looking at getting a small pop up gazebo with sides so we can sit out and also cook in it?

And also some midge netting for the van doorways.

Any tips/help/advice much appreciated:):):)

We are going to try and have a night (maybe two depending on £!) at an inn to break the trip up - a week is a long time without the luxurys of a MH/CV:D

I take the Lloyds chemists' equivalent of Piriton does the same job but cheaper. I suppose any anti-histamine tabs will do. Won't stop 'em biting but it does stop the red itchy swellings afterwards.

Hi rach82,
look's like your armed up to the teeth, go get the beggars.
We are up in Scotland then, and travelling to the Outer Hebrides on the 7th Aug from Oban.
If you see us, knock and say hello, maybe a wee dram?
Have a good trip.

Happy Camping:)

Rachel.
I was born and brought up alongside the ubiquitous West of Scotland midges and I never found a solution. ... except moving to England :D

I find that after a few glasses of wine they don't seem to matter as much....

Well its rather a good job I plan on drinking more than a few glasses of wine:):):) lol

Hi, just got back from two and a half weeks on Arran and the Uists. We did'nt find that midges were too much of a problem at this time of year, but we stayed away from areas of trees, ( except on Arran, Sannox Bay, excellent wilding spot, follow directions to picnic site ), but still not much problem with midges.
We took Avon Skin So Soft and sprayed it on our flyscreens as we like to have a window open at night for ventilation and it worked ok.
On the Uists we wild camped most nights by the sea so no midge problem at all as they don't like the salty air, but the sand flies in the day are big buggers though, and if they bite you'll know about it!!!
I would say try to avoid camping too near to trees or forested areas and use your repellents and this time of year ( they are just waking up ) you should'nt have too much of a problem.

There is a rumour that the midges are giving Scotland a miss this year.

Was given this midge beating tip by an old shepherd some years ago. Collect
sheeps wool from barb wire fences, once camp is set for the evening set fire to clumps of the wool, or just put them on the camp fire at intervals. This usually does the job:)

Just learned today that these clumps of wool also make very good scouring cloths;)

They certainly didn't give the borders amiss last weekend! But we found a secret weapon - a few sticks of Tulasi incense (green packet - vertivert flavour) placed upwind so the smoke drifted over us....it gave us two completely midge-free evenings :) but as soon as the sticks burned thru the little blighters were back. The Skin So Soft is good for 20-30 mins but really clags your hair up and kids say it burns their skin, so the incense is my secret weapon. Maybe any flavour works - dunno?

Raw chillies & for when you do get savaged toothpaste- just rub it on the bite

Try Chlorpheniramine if you have a friendly Gp. The beasties bite, but the reaction is practically zero...now the clegs!
I'm so allergic I have to carry adrenaline but it might be worth you reading Chlorphenamine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cheers for that. I've also had some nasty reactions from insect bites. I'm currently using a Cetirizine based daily antihistamine tablet. I'm sure they're available from the GP, but if like me you prefer not to visit your GP you can buy 14 days supply for a quid from asda. :)

Why the hell didn't Noah squash the little blighters when he only had 2 to deal with.:D:p:D:confused:

We use Deet.Got to be carefull with the stronger stuff-will melt plastic ! Click on the ad below your post.By the way,the Avon stuff does'nt work for every one.Good luck.
