There was a programme on tv a while back called grow your own drugs, he made a lotion that apparently midges hate.

here are the ingredients, i didnt try it but if you cant gey Avon stuff then this may be worth a try

Lemongrass Insect Repellent

10 lemongrass sticks
4 tsp scented pelargonium 'Citronella' leaves (about 15 leaves)
4 tsp whole cloves
400ml sunflower oil, to cover

1. Wash and chop the lemongrass sticks and pelargonium leaves, and place both in a blender with the cloves. Add the oil, then whizz until pulped.

2. Place the pulp in a glass heat-proof bowl and cover. Put the bowl over a pan of boiling water on a low heat, making sure there are no gaps around the bowl, and leave for 1 hour. Keep checking that the pan does not boil dry.

3. Leave to cool, then strain the citrus-and spice-scented oil through muslin to remove all the fibrous bits, and store in a pump spray bottle.

USE: Shake the bottle well, then spray liberally onto skin up to 4 times a day, paying particular attention to exposed areas like ankles, wrists and neck, and avoiding the eyes. Re-apply after washing or bathing, and before bed.

CAUTION: If any irritation occurs, wash off immediately.

STORAGE: Will keep for up to 1 year in a cool dark place.

mosquito repelant

The local radio some years ago had an article which recomended that eating aniseed balls does the trick. the aniseed goes thru the pores. I now take a liberal pocket full evry time I go fishing - and yes it works.

On a recent visit to Scotland I found that heavy rain and gale force winds help:lol-053:

We used to be issued with a very good insect repellant spray when I was working in W. Africa. Last week, the wife bought a spray can of 'Jungle Formula' which has the same distinctive smell and I think should work very well.

BTW, I still got Malaria  but that was down to working outside during the night. It did not help that where I was working was once in the Guinness Book of Records as the worst place in the world for Malaria.

Having just come back from the Oban area, I am covered in lumps which I am positive I got through the night while in bed in the van. For complete confidence, sleep under a Mosquito net. :sleep-027:

We used to get the local witchdoctor to boil up a deceased old friend, scim of the fat, and smear it on, called it - "PALOMINE" LOTION
