Yes, and the Rangers are pretty quick to move you on too....

You can overnight for 1 night in 7 at the Dark Lane car park in Rhayader, and many other council-owned car parks in Powys. See: Overnight stopovers for motorhomes in the UK

The 3 good places are the cleared areas in this link. One in the forest to the bottom left, the right hand side is a carpaking area with picnic benches, and the one in the upper middle area is woods too. All by the river and all very nice. Please dont abuse this very nice spot.

Lol . . I bet he does but hey its worth it for the scenery ... Truly breathtaking!

For the slightly less ambitious!! we stayed at Gigrin Farm (Red Kite Feeding Station - Gigrin Farm!). Where they feed the Red Kite. You can camp and watch Red Kite feeding. Well worth a night. Not the cheepest place but if you stay you can watch feeding for FREE. We went in May so not sure what set up at this time of year. Lovely area.

We were going to stay there but we found a site in builth wells that has a heated shower block that grigin does not have(want a little bit of home comfort 1st time out) and its in between elan and brecon. Will certainly in see the kites. Thanks Jayne:)

Out of interest if anyone else is interested, they do have a nice toilet block with toilet cubicles with sink and hot water. No showers though as you say. It's also in walking distance of Rhayader.
