MH Classification on V5

Checking our V5 document, I noticed that although it shows as a 'Motor Caravan' section j shows us as N2, which, from the government website:

Category N2: Vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass exceeding 3,5 tonnes but not exceeding 12 tonnes.

and of course, we're not carrying goods. On the other hand, the alternative classification of M1 or M2 is:

Category M1: Vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of passengers and comprising no more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat.
Category M2: Vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of passengers, comprising more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat, and having a maximum mass not exceeding 5 tonnes.

Whilst M2 specifies under 5 tonnes (which ours is at 4.65tonnes) it also specifies more then 8 seats, whereas our vehicle only has 2 belted ones. However M1 specifies no more than 8 seats, but doesn’t specify a weight limit.

When I spoke to the woman at DVLA she said the N2 classification is because of the vehicle weight. When I pointed out that we don't carry commercial goods, and M1 or M2 classification would be more appropriate due to weight and number of seats, she was flummoxed and said I would need to send a letter to them with all the information, so an assessment could be made.

Has anybody else questioned this classification?

Cheers

My Section J is blank - as is most of my V5C, including CO2, Max. Permissible Mass, No. of seats, etc.

But then the DVLA do not seem to know, or care, what they put on their own document.

Yep sect J is blank on mine too , thats on a 3850kg Private HGV

Mine is a 2017 Swift Escape 684 plated at 3700 PHGV section j it shows M1. I queried with the Crit Air what do I put for type & was told that if my V5 said M1 then I was classed as a private car. Friends we were with this week who are in Spain hadn't heard of the Crit Air they have a 2008 Bessecar 3500 & their V5 section j is blank.

Mine is blank in section J, revenue weight of 4000 KG gross and class is Private HGV

Just checked mine and it says as follows

D.5 MOTOR CARAVAN

[X] PRIVATE HGV

[Y] 4100 KG GROSS

J ( Blank / nothing )

Once set, that field seems to be locked forever - it doesn't actually make any difference to anything so I wouldn't worry about it. It is a very common situation with VW Transporter conversions.
Like so many others here, that entry on my V5C is missing (they only seemed to populate it after a certain date).

Thanks for your replies. I only posed the question because I was wondering what crit-aire sticker I would get for our MH, which is on a Euro 4 engine but looking at some posts elsewhere it also seems to go on whether >3.5t (which we are) and sometimes on whether the classification is M1/M2/N1/N2 in the section j .

Cheers

I came across these M1, N1 categories the other day when trying to pay for a crossing on the new Runcorn Widness bridge, it is a toll bridge and when I phoned to pay they told me my van would cost £6 even though their website says under 3.5 tonnes £2 Merseyflow - Toll Charges for crossing the 2 bridges vary for different types of vehicles, there are various special discount packages available and several ways to reduce cost..

I questioned this and they said that was what their computer said and to prove I was under 3.5 my log book would have to say N1 or M1, my log book doesnt have this marked, the man on the phone didnt believe me and talked me through where to look, it still wasnt there. Some googling and a call to Swansea worked out that these categories were only put on log books after March 2001. So back on the phone to Mersey Flow and after about 20 mins they amended my account and now recognise that am less than 3.5 tonne and I pay the lower amount once a year when I take it for an MOT. Still not sure why its not on my log book as it was registered May 2001.

I don't have that entered on my 2003 vehicle ...

As this, I've seen before if it was first registered as a plain van then it stays as such even if it is described as a 'motor caravan' in the other field.

Are you sure?(said in a very condescending tone) its after L in the list on the left :lol-061: thats exactly how he told me to look for it. Just dont try to cross the Dartford crossing of the new Mersey Flow one or they will charge you as an HGV

Dartford crossing

I have a Dart tag as I use the crossing about 20 times a year.
4350Kg, pay the car rate. I set up the tag by phone and gave my registration and said it was a Motor Home,
No problems so far.

Just looked at toll rates there on Mersey Flow ... hell of a jump from car to heavier vehicles!
