Got this from another group, what the hell is wrong with people

Hello all, we have the Metal Bridge Inn near Gretna. Recently we have had a lot of people drive to the back of our building, fill up their water, empty their waste water and empty their bins and then they just drive off. In fact, we have had 5 just this week alone! We don’t ever ask anyone to come in and buy something in order to use our facilities but a simple acknowledgement or hello would be nice.

So I’m here to ask if anyone has any ideas on what to do about this situation? As the minority’s are spoiling for the rest.

Also, over the years we have had a tiny amount of people doing it but it seems to increased massively recently. Has anyone seen us advertised as a place just to empty and fill up and leave?

Look forward to hearing your responses and thank you very much for reading! P.S. 99.99% of people are so so lovely, considerate and friendly. It is just the small amount that spoil it.metal bridge

Think it’s terrible that the scroungers spoil it for us ,the decent thing when places offer such kind and generous locations like this they should at least come in for a cuppa and snack minimum

Charge a fiver per unit and reclaimable at bar on purchase
The world is going nuts
Imho and mine only I see a lot of rental vehicles abusing areas etc and driving with waste taps open etc

HOPE THIS GREAT GESTURE DOES NOT CEASE DUE TO MINORITIES SPOILING ANOTHER SPOT

KEEP UP YOUR GREAT WORK-METAL BRIDGE

Turn the tap off and lock the bins.

I looked at buying a place and apparently a local business used to fill their water tanks from an outside tap, and the place was on a water meter, they never asked if they could use the tap !

You are always going to get selfish and inconsiderate people, thankfully, they remain a minority. Can you put a sign out back saying something like. 'Thank you for using our free facilities, come see what we have to offer inside'. It may just prick their conscience or they may just think that there are more freebies on offer?

We have yet to visit the Metal Bridge but thank you anyway for being so welcoming.

I just emailed them possibly others could do so

Here’s their email address

Hi

I read a post on my Motorhome forum, and quite frankly I was appalled at what has been happening at your Inn. I would like to apologise to you for such selfish unforgivable behaviour, there is no justification for what has been going on.

First I would like to thank you for your kind generosity allowing us to use your facilities, and I hope that you will continue to do so. But if you feel that this is being abused by a minority, you should consider your options. When using similar facilities on the Isle of Arran we always put £5 in the donation box. Possibly you could make a similar charge, refundable at the bar if drink or food is purchased.

I and I am sure most of us would be more than happy to either pay for your kindness.
I have never been to your Inn, but if I ever do I will come in for a coffee and cake or possibly even a meal.

Many thanks again for your generosity.

Regards

It distresses me to hear experiences like this. I agree with the Laird -perhaps a notice - a small payment for services with, perhaps, a refund in the Pub.

It distresses me a little to say, that yes, your ad could be seen as a place simply to fill up and leave. I've not seen your ad but I've looked on your website. Perhaps you could put a note on there - similar to the letter qluoted. Motorhomers are welcome but ...

I will email the Metal Bridge later today with a better thought out solution - but that's really it - your ad hints at a completely free service.

I hope you get it sorted out

The same thing happens on the CS farm site I use regularly near Penrith. It’s ran very much on trust as the owners work full time.
I’ve seen motorhomes arrive, dump their waste water etc, fill up and leave. Others spend a night then leave either without paying or leaving less than the £10.00 fee criticising the facilities, after staying the night and using the facilities strangely enough. The owner told me last year that it was even posted on a forum that motorhomes could dump waste and fill up free, cheeky tw-ts !
The cheek of some people is unbelievable but there’s nought as strange as folk !

Yes unfortunately will look like a freebie to many . I've stopped there once and it's a very handy spot .
p.s. I had my dinner there

I'm off to the dentist so a bit in haste but this has been bothering me. The situation is similar to other people in the same business.

Here is the ad, on here, from the Portsmouth Arms. Duncan says it with grace and humour. Perhaps something like this on the website.

People like the Metal Bridge and the Portsmouth Arms are so useful to us that we shoiuld support as best we can and ....well, tell others of our support.

THE PORTSMOUTH ARMS HOTEL,DEVON Home - THE PORTSMOUTH ARMS HOTEL,DEVONhi we are the portsmouth arms hotel situated on the a377 between exeter and barnstaple. we have a big car park and would like to welcome wild camping members to use it for overnight stays. we dont charge but hopefully if you stay you will sample some of our west country real ale and delicious food. however there is no obligation to eat or drink. please introduce yourself before setting up camp.

When we had our guest house we could turn of occupation of some rooms by putting up the price on line by £1.............true. At £29 they sold well, at £30 no way.

It looks as if someone has abused your hospitality totally. My suggestion is to put a lock on the water and a sign up saying key at reception £20 deposit. Saw this on Islay and it seemed to be working well.

Have to agree with this . Those who appreciate the hospitality would have no problem with paying a deposit or , better I think , paying so much which can be redeemed at the bar .
Unfortunately if something is seen as free it is often not valued .
Also agree with the point in an earlier post about rental vans . There appear to be more and more . If its a one off holiday some of these people won't care what damage they do to the reputation of the rest of us

I stayed at the Metal Bridge a couple of years ago on the way up to Orkney, they are very friendly and the food was lovely. Since then they have spent a lot of money and effort on improving the area where you park up for the night and the facilities. It's such a shame that their hospitality is being abused in this way.

I was going to stop there this week but I carried on to Penrith instead where there is a farm CL which charged £5 last time I was there, now £6. They have water, CD & rubbish disposal but as I was on my way home I didn't use any of the facilities. The camping field was waterlogged so the farmer put me in the farmyard, near the cow pen.

Maybe they could put a sign up "Facilities for use of customers only, please come in and introduce yourselves when you arrive" or something?

A great spot to park a motorhome when heading North or South. Very welcoming hosts and great food in the bar/restaurant. A Britstop location with facilities to empty water tanks and toilet and also fill up with fresh water. We've used it twice now and very impressed both times.

We have a large designated motorhome area with plenty of space. We also have facilities to top up Fresh Water and to get rid of all kinds of Waste Water. Specials | The Metal Bridge Inn

Just got a reply to my email, thought you should all read it.

Hello, thank you so much for your email!

That is a good idea, it’s the most popular suggestion we’ve had. We’re just trying to see what options there are as we’ve never been the kind of place to have strict policies as most that we get have been great. It’s more about the acknowledgement, just to pop in and say hello is enough for us.

Thank you again and maybe see you sometime.

Kind regards
Megan

It is on Camper Contact app, the write up is not obvious that you have to go into the pub, so perhaps signs saying a charge to non customers might help.

Wow
I guess its just difference of folks.

I would not dream of using waste disposal/ water refill without purchasing at least a drink. They are not a charity and I thinkanyone who abuses this, does so knowing they are taking the piss and being greedy.

Same here.....
Sadly this seems to be a dying concept among the massed 'entitled' sorts of this World
