Mersey Gateway Tolls

Hi Folks
Dont know if anyone else is aware but ive been having a battle with both the DVLA and Mersey tolls over the classification of my "motor caravan" registered with DVLA But due to the fact on the V5 stating it is a Light Goods Vehicle for toll purposes it comes under Class 3 even though Mersey Gateway site lists vehicles under 3.5 tonne and up to 8 seats as Class 2.

Mersey Gateway told me yesterday that All Motor Caravans now come into Class 3! so this means if you have a small "Motor Caravan" you are going to be charged £6 per crossing one way instead of £2 each way.

DVLA told me that they cannot change the classification from Light Goods Vehicle! yet I also have a LWB Transit La Strada which is 3.5 yet that has on the V5 Private Light Goods Vehicle (PLG) on the V5!

These classifications seem to be a nightmare and open to interpretation by whoever your speaking to at the time!

I wonder how many other Motor Home Clubs are aware of this and is there anyway of collectively making a representation to the Minister of Transport Chris Grayling MP to get this changed as there must be thousands of small Motor Caravans that come under the 3.5 tonne limit, like VWs and many other makes.

Im not clever enough to start one of these online petition things but I'll feel someone needs to take this matter up and make other Motor Caravan users aware of the situation.

As a foot note all crossings over or under the Mersey are now Tolled unless Ive been misinformed .

Anyone cat any thoughts on this matter.

Mersey Gateway is a deliberate thieving project with confusing signs and an obstructive method of payment. in it first month of operation it received over £1m in fines!!!
AFAIK Tolls do not exist in Wales and Scotland!

I was fined on the occasions for crossing this toll but i appealed on the grounds of insufficient signage at the time to say it was a toll road and got both fines rescinded .

Every time I use this crossing I have constant problems.

I am constantly writing to both my MP and the MP for Hatton about this appalling system .

The way they have introduced a toll onto the existing bridge is appalling. At the end of the day,if we allow these people to rob us motorists,we deserve everything we get.

Styx

It's not only the unclear definition of categories that gets me, it's also the size of the tolls. A few years ago in New Hampshire in the States we approached s toll booth and I was amazed to find the turnpike charge was a matter of a few cents. The idea of shelling out a few quid to use a bridge is totally alien to me and long may it remain so.
Looks like the Mersey is the new Styx. 🤔

Chosing my route to Chester / Wales always was decision time for me. City centre and Tunnel or M57 and Runcorn Bridge.

Looks like I'll be using the tunnels from now on.

Not too bad for me I can get to the tunnels without going through the centre of Liverpool.

mersey gateway

hi everyone
as a postscript on this I yesterday received a reply from Mersey Gateway/Merseyflow stating that

In response to your e mail regarding your vehicle classification
Please be advised that your vehicle classification has been updated on our system and so you should now be able to make your correct toll fee payment of £2.00 by any of our payment methods.
I apologise for the delay in updating our system causing you inconvenience.

Result for me but others beware as they may well charge you at the class 3 charge even though yuo may be under 3.5 tonne
