Hi all, I am about to purchase a another van for self build and I wonder what you would choose for the base vehicle. At the moment I am looking at a Merc 814 Vario and a Merc 416 with the 2.7 5 cylinder motor, both are low mileage and in good condition. Not sure I want anything newer than 2007 models due to the impending MOT changes for 2008 models onward. Cheers.

When I was looking for our mh the tp of the list for the chassis cab was Merc Sprinter with autobox. I will admit that that I was still thinking of Fiat/Renault/Peugeot cars from years ago and that was putting me off. Now I know I was wrong about them I am still glad I got the Sprinter base. Mine has the 2.7TD motor and it is a dream to drive, far more power than I have needed so far but I suppose it will be useful if we decide to add a tow bar and start towing a vehicle on a trailer, not something I am intending at the moment but who knows.

I don't know about the models you mention but I am very happy with the 2.7TD, my mh was registered in 2007 but the chassis/cab was produced in 2005 and is the Euro4 engine.

The Vario 814d has a 4250 4cyl. engine. It's the Varios with designations ?12 that have the 2.9L 5 pot engines eg 512d. First figure is GVW, 5 signifies 5.6 tonnes.
The 8 in 814d is 7.5 tonnes. Mercedes IDing is a minefield !

814 Vario is a very big machine, ultra reliable but quiet slow by today’s standards.

From 1987 to 2013, all these vans were imported into the UK on one of 3 chassis, a SWB, a MWB and a
LWB. By far the majority were LWB and most motorhome conversions were built on this. Only known as
the Vario after '96. The bodies remained much the same throughout the 16 years.
The LWB is 23' 8" O/A in length, not so big when compared to the overbodied 3.5t coachbuilts
being built these days.
Agreed in the main they are slow, but depends on which engine version naturally enough, mine certainly is!
But the last of the 4.25L Varios comprised 150bhp/170bhp versions with impressive torque figures
@ low revs after all they have to haul 7.5 tonnes.
The range became electronified! in '96 the only reason I didn't buy a new replacement.

Is there a link to a dummies guide type page by any chance? I see all the different numbers and don’t have a clue what the stand for, this is first post that I have seen with this info. I may be able to work out what mine is 👍

RWD only for me twice I have driven away when my friends parked alongside have been stuck one was in a Movano the other time was with a Nuevo.
I had a Iveco daily first time now on a VW Crafter.

Don't know of any source that lists the models year by year.

But this might help, taking a model or 2 as examples describes the general rule here goes;

814D Vario, the eight means 8 tonnes, the 8 is the nominal sum of the
2 axle loadings permitted, the front axle is rated 2.5t max. and the rear
5.6t giving a theoretical 8.1t. but the GVW is rated at 7.5t max. with any
load distributed over the axles in any way you like, so long as the max. allowed
individual axle weight is not exceeded and the overall GVW is not exceeded.

The 14 are the first two digits of the BHP in this case nominally 140BHP
actually 136BHP.

D obviously for diesel, surprise.

Another eg. ;

The earlier 709D is 7 tonnes, front axle 2.3t max. rear 4.7t max. so actually is
7 tonnes! except the GVW is 6.6 tonnes, and 09 signifies nom. 90BHP but
actually 86 BHP

The MB ID. 'system' above applies generally, except coach derivations which
have an ID variance which start with an '0'. I'm not as familiar with these.

If you post the description of your vehicle, someone might be able to ID it,
at least to some degree.
