Maybe we should, Maybe we shouldn't

Mrs Fuggs and me are thinking of selling our Hobby 750S MH and getting a 5th wheel. It means we can dump a set of tax, insurance and MOT and getting rid of a Mitsubishi Outlander [LPG] that we have.

Our Hobby has done very few miles this last year, but the cost of tax, Ins, and service is still there....

SO........ we thought about say a Ford Ranger Thunder and a 5er.

Anyone got any ideas about them, good bad or indifferent?

Cheers

i use a mitsubishi canter double cab .shortened the chassis and pull a lynton 20 ft trailer much better than all these pickups most are lacking power .if you go bigger than 3.5 ton you get cheap road tax and possible mot excempt. pm me for details if you want to know more.
cheers alan.

Now that does sound a good setup. Didn't really want to do the old cut and chop caper any more, preferring the easy way out now at this time of life....:D

only took the bit off behind the rear springs .dont need any chassis mod stuff as its used private pulling a living van. easy to do fifth wheels arent too expensive .the dear part is the gast electric compressor. unfortunately cant put pics up as i am hopeless on these things but can work metal. if you go for a mini truck like mitzy or isuzu you get a 4litre eng. iveco daily do a nice miniartic as well. how big do you fancy going?
i,m class one driver but woudnt want a bigger outfit than mine it fits little villages and mountain tracks a treat. i find if i was 2ft longer it would restrict my travels ,at the moment its just right for jacknife turning on a two lane rd .my mate with his little daf takes more shunts . cheers alan.

I don't have class 1, but have driven all types of stuff over the years, can even reverse a 4 wheel trailer, so can well handle 30ft set-ups no probs.
I agree with you, the limiting factor are narrow lanes etc, certainly my Hobby at 27ft, plus a car trailer on the back is quite ok normally, but you do need an eye on the mirrors through the narrow villages of France, and the twist and turns on Lake District by roads.

Ideally would want to go more than 27ft, and with a tow vehicle of course wouldnt then need to tow a car/trailer on the back as would have transport once the 5th is dropped off.

I would also need the tow unit to be used at home so to speak, as I tow trailers and stuff anyway, so that's why though the Ford Thunder or similar would be the best bet. Hope that makes sense.

you dont need class one.if you get the right set up you can even drive on a B+E licence .its possible to drive well over 7.5 ton and be legal. speaking to a traffic examiner today and he agrees mine could be voluntary dropped to 3.5 ton and keep its train weight of 9.6ton and be a B+E licence.
think you will find them abit gutless . mine is only a bit longer than a car and hardly much wider. total lengh is 30ft ,but as it bends it becomes a smaller vehicle in use. still 7 seater . give a ring on 07971962361 if yo need more info. cheers alan.
