Mashed up caravans

on my travels in the wagon today ive seen 4 accidents with caravans 3 of wich they were total write offs and all on down hill gradiants will they never learn trying to overtake going downhill to fast they fitted speed limiters to artics and rigid goods wagons so if a car is fitted with a tow bar do you think they should be restricted to 56 mph ?

No... That would be ridiculous to fit a limiter to car just because is has a towbar. It would need to be switched off when they are not towing anything, so they could just switch it off anytime.
But i do think there should be some sort of mandatory training before you can tow a caravan. A lot of tuggers cant even reverse their vans properly. And the amount of times i've seen caravans unevenly loaded making the front of the towing vehicle point skyward.

hi jeff
what i intended to say was along the lines of what they did to hgv/lgvs by if a tow bar is fitted on a new car/small van it would be limited for life to say 55/60 mph wich now days would make no differance as the amout of cars holding back to 55/60 mph to save fuel is growing by the day but i would rather drive my rig and trailer at 55 than chance my luck with a car & caravan have u ever seen a caravan wobble when a wagon passes

I think putting speed limiters on cars that have a towbar fited is an absolutely stupid idea. I've been a trucker for the last 25 years until i retired recently, its bad enough trucks being bunched together because of their limiters, can you imagine the congestion that thousands of cars being limited would cause, just because they have a towbar fitted.
Anyway speed doesn't cause accidents.... Bad driving does.

I thnk that the answer is quite simple.
1-Proper anti snake devices to be made mandatry
2-Proper driver training
3-MOTs for Caravans and Trailers

There, easy isn't it? Now all it needs is the will to make it happen

been a trucker for 25 years a few less than me anyway nowdays its allways slow moving today it took a full 10 hour drive day 15 in total to go from wigan to bourne in linconshire and back every week it takes longer to get where you want to go

as for a speed limiting device, one could be fitted to a vehicle that only came into operation when a trailer was hitched up and the electrics plugged in ie the limiter s electrical circuit enabled as soon as the plugs connected. (we all know about the fuse dodge with hgv s ) but i guess the cost of the system would be too much for some people on a limited budget thus making caravaning only for the better off. the other alternative learn people to drive correctly there are too many inept drivers on the roads today i towed old caravans for years never got into trouble once if you use your common sense then all will be ok. as for hgv s its not long since i was in a car and had to drive at 70 mph to keep up with him and he was not the only one so there are some lunatics out there that aught to know better

i wish my truck would go a bit faster 55mph most times i cant get out of lane one but not to bother this new job pays by the hour so i might do 50 mph on a clear motorway

Its probably only a matter of time before variable speed restrictors are fitted to all vehicles. The technology has already been invented for these speed restrictors to cut in at whatever speed limit applies for a certain road.
It will happen beause of the health & safety obsessed, nanny state, that we now live in.

dont think that will happen .ok all they need is a gps enabled device which is fitted in the car or whatever as soon as you enter a say 30 mph zone hey presto your car limited to 30 mph quite feasible, but just look at the revenue lost through speeding fines ha this country never in a month of sundays to hell with road safety they want our cash

Quite possibly Mandrake, but no doubt this and future governments will always think up more ways of screwing the motorist.

They should only be doing 60mph anyway!

A large percentage of caravan accidents has been found to be caused by tyre blow-outs due to old and perished tyres, hence VOSA pulling caravans on the M5 heading south every summer and checking there tyres for signs of ageing!

I think the whole idea of limiters a bad idea,,trucks are bunched for miles , making passing a joke ,, truckes with over 500 bhp limited to 56 is a joke ,, i used to run a truck which could run at 93mph !! at 38 ton,,,but it didnt mean i drove it at that speed ,, but i never got bunched or took ages to pass another truck,, so limiters on cars would be an even bigger disaster in my opinion ..

500 bhp x 38 tons x93 mph what is the stopping distance even if the driver is somewhat alert at that moment in time all this talk about hgv drivers being responsible at the wheel mmmmm (how do you know it would do 93 if you dident do it ????) i spent 2 years as a drivers mate in 38 tonners 56 mph 10 foot away from the next wagons trailer can make your hair stand on end somewhat (ever seen a 40 footer hit another up the rear suicide jockey or what ) . drivers drinking more red bull than the services can supply and taking pro plus to keep them awake . how many times have you been on the motorway and had an artic 10 feet away from your bumper at 65 mph if you stop good night welcome oblivion.... i know this may upset some of our truckers on here, and i am not saying they are all the same but trucks need to be limited and also stopped from using what some call the newcastle overdrive down hill neutral gear to us as i have said speeding in a hgv is a lot worse than in a car the penalty should be a life ban on driving hgvs to me nomad 1 you seem a little irresponsible

Mandrake who do you think you are to call me irrisponsable ?,, ive been driving trucke up to 44 tons all over europe for 27 years without one single accident !!
I drive responsibly with reguard for other drivers,,,i have driven millions of miles,,i dont think your 2 years as a drivers mate gives you the right to call me irrisponsable !!

One wonders how fast the Road trains get up to in Oz: bet they crack on

dident say you personaly was irresponsible i meant the post.read it again you may well be a good driver and no i dont have a hgv license and yes i only spent 2 years in the passengers seat but i still stand by my post that there is a large majority of idiots behind a hgv wheel and i have also witnessed the carnage those idiots cause first hand . but then again they walk away sometimes!!! the usual saying of wagon drivers is who is gonna argue with me in this

thats seems aimed at me ? ,,,, i dont know the hgv drivers you know but i have not heard drivers i know saying who is gonna argue with me in this !!

most hgv drivers i know are responsable profesional drivers,,,in my oppinion anyone who uses there vehicle size and wieght to bully other drivers is an idiot and a danger on the road !!

LIKE I SAID not being personal, not my way. just a comment about how i see things. you may well be a professional driver and take your job seriously, its a pity others dont

You can pick out bad drivers in any category, whether it be truckers, bikers, bus drivers, or car drivers. But to just single out truckers is prejudicial.
The vast majority of truckers are highly professional drivers, that have vastly more driving experience than car drivers. A trucker is more than well aware of the consequences of their truck causing an accident.
It is a fact that trucks are involved in far less accidents than cars pro rata, and this is down to truckers professional driving.
