i need to get a map of france as a back up in case of sat nav failure, any particular maps recommended and are these obtainable in wh smiths or similar thanks,
Solarman.

Yes it's a good idea to have a map as well - I got the AA one of Amazon.

I found you get to see so much more of the Country just by looking at the route on the map.

Always use the Sat Nav, but find you can just end up "following" them with really knowing were you have been!

Cheers
Matthew

I prefer AA maps, they can be bought in good book shops or on line

I would recommend the mitchelin maps as there is far more information on them than others.

Also if you are like me and interested in military history, Michelin do maps overprinted with battles miletary sites etc., I bought mune in France and it covers Germany and Holand as well as Denmark. Excellent. Try the Michelin site.

It might seem like a mad idea but depending on how long you are staying in France consider buying the French waterways maps and or books.
These will give you good places to park free and to get water and dump waste properly.
Once I find somewhere I fancy going I give it a look on google maps street view and have a good look around at whats near by.
All the best.

Thanks for all replies i will probably end up with more than one map, many thanks for your recommendations,
Solarman.

Love this one as it has a nice big font, why do they make writing so small these days?! Never used to happen when I was younger...:rolleyes2:
I just wish they made a similar one for Italy, as we are planning to go there this summer (if I'm navigating it may well be a mystery tour)
you'll not believe this but i actually ordered this one and when it came i opened the box and guess what it was the English map!Must've clicked the map witout looking at it properly, duh, anyway i'll have to order it again now.

Just get lost.

Ditch the sat nav, buy a Mitchelin map and don't get uptight if you get lost.
We've found some wonderfull places in France when we were lost.
Afret all, having gone to see France you'll have more fun off the tourist trail.

listen to your aunty and get lost, take that left turn and find places and people you'd never see. i ended up at one point making kitchens for goat farmers in the alps, and learning the language, getting lost and having no plan has to be part of the plan
