The Chateau Maeuil is on the D939 from Angouleme to Brantome. We have passed this place lots of times and did not know that you could visit it. There is parking opposite which is very acceptable. The co-ords are N45deg 453.43' E000deg450.82' ( these should be right). It is very quiet and I don't see a problem for stopping overnight and there are picnic tables there as well.
Out of all the chateau's we visited this was the most entertaining. Our tour guide, who was also the owner of the chateau, was a little old man very much like Catweazle. Scruffy, in his slippers, holes in his clothes, loopy dog and a cup of some kind of brown liquid in his hand. He speaks good English and none of our group which included French could stop laughing all the way round. This far better than Faulty Towers and in real life. It well worth the 7 euros each.
